I go after the septic tanks and the chimney every three years. '09 was the last time this came up on the home maintenance calendar, and it was a very busy Fall, so I let them both slide.1st 5er wrote:Had the septic tanks pumped out today.
Wow, what are you burning and how often that 3 years is doing that?MicahO wrote:Superbowl Sunday '10 and we're getting ready for a party. We've got a ton of food cooking, and I get a fire going in the fireplace. I'm wandering around the den, getting snacks and drinks set up and I hear a 747 spooling up at the neighbors house next door. My first thought was, "Damn, when did Dom get a 747?"
We don't heat with the fireplace, so it really only sees action on weekends in the winter. There was one year in there of fairly green wood, but again, it's not heavy use.WilNJ wrote: Wow, what are you burning and how often that 3 years is doing that?
Chimney sweeps are typically one of the worst ofenders when it comes to home improvement scams and selling snake oil.MicahO wrote:The house spent it's first 12 years with no cap and no problems. Three years after a cap was installed, there was a chimney fire, so we are back to no-cap. If there are water issues and the sleeve cracks, I'd much rather re-sleeve the chimney than have another fire.
That sounds like a winner! I typically leave our bottom damper one notch open, all damn winter. Not good for the heating bills..... I have to look into that as a retrofit.....WilNJ wrote:The thing I love about our chimney is that we have a top mount damper, it keeps the chimney liner out of the whether and because the flue is filled with warmed air from the house, we don't have to pre heat the flue before lighting the fire.
Happy shopping.MicahO wrote:That sounds like a winner! I typically leave our bottom damper one notch open, all damn winter. Not good for the heating bills..... I have to look into that as a retrofit.....
Welcome to...MicahO wrote:... It did not fall off - the thing was held on by 4 plastic clippies, there is no sign of it in the engine bay, and that bay looks nearly airtight. It had to have been removed. But the car has only 3K miles on it and it's never been anywhere for service or even valet parking...
That's a possibility in this family. My brother-in-law came by Saturday. He had rented a little Fiat 500 and was telling me how much fun it was. So I drove it up and down the street. It was an automatic, shifted jerkily, made no power but did make a lot of noise, and it steered and cornered as if 110% of the weight was in the nose. I couldn't tell if he was kidding when he told me that he enjoyed driving it.davintosh wrote:![]()
She lives downtown Chicago. It could possibly mean going from many cool cars to public transportation.rmiddendorf wrote:Be careful- this is a perfectly good way to go from a cool car collection to a single appliance.alijonny wrote:I went on a date last night.

Hey, and get this: I didn't scare her away. Se got my humor.
I'm hip to idea...
I had lunch today with my wife's brother, who lives in Austin. He said that he's learned to tell Texans who ask him where he's from, "I'm not a native-born Texan, but I got here as soon as I could."nik77356 wrote:Impossible, people from Texas are Texan for life.alijonny wrote:Pfffffff yeah right, that will never happen. Did I mention she converted from Texas to Illinois?
I was born/raised in Houston and now go to school in San Antonio. While the hill country is gorgeous, there's just something about the Houston because as far as I'm concerned Houston IS Texas.davintosh wrote:I had lunch today with my wife's brother, who lives in Austin.
