What did you do to your E28 today?

After poking around under the hood tonight with a multimeter & finding nothing amiss, took it to an O'Reilly Auto store & had the battery checked. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. So I got a new & properly-sized battery (for $122!

) for the Freestar to replace the undersized unit that the dopes at another place put in it last year. That one went in the eta. Problem solved, for now. Also found a sticker on the side of the battery that came out of the eta that said it was installed in 2001.

Also determined that I need to track down the proper set of battery hold down parts to replace the mickey mouse setup that came from the PO. Or, since it's my kid's car now, maybe I'll just put a bug in his ear that the thing ought to be relocated to the trunk. He's had it a couple of days now; about time he started spending some money on it.

P.S. I couldn open the hoof in no way so to remove the spark plugs cables...

- removed wannabe k&n air intake
- installed factory air intake with new Mann air filter
- removed old distributor cap and rotor
- installed new Bremi distributor cap and rotor
- removed old NGK spark plugs
- installed new NGK copper spark plugs

- start up car, purrs like a kitten...

Installed new tail lights to remedy my old, mostly inoperable crap. also put in 10w bulbs, everything is nice and bright now.

As is usually the case with old cars, the job started out simple- rebuild the water valve on the fire wall, change the coolant, replace the thermostat. The water valve was simple. Completely gummed up and the rubber was shriveled, so it was a good call to rehab that. The thermostat was in horrible shape, also. I decided to take the t-stat housing and cover off to tap the 6mm bolt holes for new 6mm bolts and clean up the hose necks for new hoses- and this is what I find. I'm not really surprised

Fortunately autohausaz has both the cover and housing (shown) at a great price, so I ended up buying all new sensors also, for just over $117 total. Can't wait to install this Tuesday

changed the oil and cleaned roughly 4 cups of dirt out of each rocker panel when cleaning the sunroof drains.

Next up is to remove the center console so I can attempt to get the flapper doors between the heater and AC boxes changed to eliminate the icy air blowing at my leg.

87 535is - Adjusted headlights, cleaned side marker lenses, replaced fog light lamp H-1, and replaced pssgr side control arm. Passed VA safety inspection!

Today, with the help of Nicke28, The Beast got a 'new to him' rear drive-shaft half along with a set of poly rear sub-frame bushings.
He was very happy afterwards.

A good cleaning, inside and out, of the Beast.
Finally washed all the 2011 Tex-Fest LSB&F dust off prepping for tomorrows Coffee & Cars..
Also installed 3 of the 4 window wipes I'd gotten from Brian.
The right rear window didn't want to go down

and I didn't want to remove the panel.

Tomorrow...

Sold the passenger-side comfort seat and the manual base from the driver's seat to the guy who bought MrDane's black '84 535i. That's great and all, but the guy works at an O'Reilly Auto store; the process of selling it has required two trips to that store, in which I ended up spending about $50 more than what I sold the seat for. Yes I needed the stuff, but it just seems pretty ironic. Good thing I don't do this stuff for a living or I'd be skinnier than slammin_e28.

INstalled the Ed Raether steering box mount fix, then straightened the steering wheel. Still needs an alignment. Also installed the wideband o2 sensor and fuel filter while the car was up in the air. Doesn't lean out on it's way to redline now!

Pulled out the new temperature sending unit because it went south after an hour and put the old one back in. FAG let me down...

- replaced a couple hose connectors that go from the air intake tube to the valve cover and I would like to say idle control valve
- replaced a couple vaccuum lines
- replaced a fan clutch and wow! it was such an easy job and solved my overheating issue. In-n-out drive thru here I come!

I also replaced the clutch slave cylinder, as the mechanic replaced the mast clutch cylinder on Thursday. Pedal dropped to the floor on the way home, so I assumed the slave went.

Replaced the slave, but the pedal still goes to the floor. Bled the slave, etc.

Looks like I get to drive it back, without a clutch, to have him re-do his work.

Removed the hater blower motor, removed the fans from either end, cut off each end of the motor with a Dremel, removed the completely shot and corroded bushing and put in some roller bearings I had (old R/C equipment is the best) laying around, then soldered the ends back on. Doesnt smoke on the first setting, or squeal on the second and third settings.

Replaced cap, rotor and spark plug wires and the effect is absolutely amazing today. (I have 172K on the car, I don't think this stuff was ever replaced). Much smoother idle and way smoother power delivery. A very satisfying fix!

Ignored the dismal idle due to the state of the cap and rotor. I really gotta get my megasquirt and wasted spark setup going.

It's also losing a bit of coolant, I haven't found any drips or leaks, and no smoke, but it's down almost a liter since 4 or 5 months ago

I'm hoping it's just the petcock on the bottom of the radiator and I just haven't caught it in the act. I've got another (cleaner) radiator ready to go in, I just need a better excuse than that to drain the coolant.

Finished up the pan gasket project. Those two bolts at the back of the oil pump had me flummoxed for a while...

Now the hydraulic pump is wigging out. I had it tied up at an angle and I'm hoping it will bleed itself while driving.
