Potlole vs oilpan (Fuvk!!!)

I am running bavauto softsports. Car lowered 3/4 inch?? Just got done installing PG UCAs, LCAs, tie rods...take the car out for a test drive and all is well. Decide to take the finacee out to dinner to celebrate. Hit a pot hole the size of Cleveland at about 20-25 mph and wiped out the oil pan. Cracked the complete fuck out of it. Gapping hole, crack up to block! I pulled over and stopped the car in about 10 seconds. Most of the oil came out after the fact. Hopefully I m not all done.!! But I also broke the motor mount support and who know what all else. Jimminy Cricket!.

Any one got one of those under armour nerf bars?? Anyone know if they are still available??

I have stock suspension on my 85 535i. I will be rebuilding the struts soon but not lowering them as I am concerned about oil pan destruction. I also like to go camping and explore crappy country roads. I live and drive in Baltimore city and there are lots of potholes here.

I have been dreaming up an oil pan shield that would bolt up on the front member under the radiator and the member behind the motor. If I ever come up with a design I will post it.

Has anyone used any type of oil pan shield?

At least you pulled over immediately. It could've been much worse. Someone else on this board, his wife hit a curb in the middle of the road, cracked the block, and kept driving until the engine quit. Woops. She messed up more than the oil pan on that one!

I believe they have become hard to find.

There's a skid plate available from BMW that works on M30-powered E28s. I'm not sure of the details -- price, weight, availability -- but it was available at least some time last year.

To my knowledge, I bought the last one from BMW stock. I also sold that one. So, used is the way to go. They weigh about 19-20 pounds and went for $210 shipped.

My fault, I meant the oil pan. Durrrrr. She drove it for a while after that without oil.

Mind you that this was at 25 mph. The police kept asking me if I was speeding, but I had just turned on this street from a red light. 2000lbs at 25 mph versus an aluminum oil pan is no contest for the oil pan. I am going to attempt to post pictures. I am also going to attempt to put a claim in on this with VA (this happened in Arlington, VA). Who knows. If the car is done, there are goind to be some good parts cheap soon.

Front Aggregate Protective Plate

Gotta find one for the 535 and the M5. Can go thru this again, if I survive this one, that is...

This is my beater car, but still - I can't leave it alone and it is getting reliable and nice to take long trips in. The automatic sits in traffic no problems.
