I hate batteries, fearful experience as a youth has me jittery. So, the M5 battery is dead. I put it on a trickle charger and no dice. All lights come up, but just no crank. Attempted to jump the car. Still...no crank, just lights. Battery then began to smell of sulfur. So I removed it, put it on cardboard and since it is outside and snowy, I covered it with plastic in a way that it will still vent. Voltage is approximately 12.2. No bubbling or boiling sound.
I may be being paranoid, but I live in a dense packed area. Is this thing going to explode? Or will it slowly normalize given some time? How can I transport it?

It won't explode. Trade it in at AutoZone or similar source of your new battery. Set it on/in something to protect your vehicle during transport and they'll dispose of it properly.

Unfortunately battery thieves look for one in the car, steal it then wait for you to replace it with a brand new one which they then steal! Nobody wants that piece of refuse sitting outside your garage. Recycle it, and you'll sleep well.

Do/did the cells have water in them? It kind of sounds like you were charging a dry battery. Either way, it's probably toast now.
