(no brakes, vacuum pump rebuild or replace?)

Post by ralph524 »

After searching both this forum and the yahoo 524td page, I've found numerous mentions of brake problems similar to mine, but no definitive solution.

As the most important step to getting my 1986 524td roadworthy following timing belt, tensioner and water pump replacement, and newish glow plugs, I hope someone here can enlighten me and help me get my brakes working.

When starting the car in Park, applying the brakes, and shifting the car into Drive, a large amount of braking force is required to keep the car motionless during the shift from P to D or to stop the car while idling at slow speeds. Only once the car has been driven through a few gears do the brakes seem to have any power assist, and this assist is only present the FIRST time you depress the pedal after driving (foot on the gas). So say, driving at 50 MPH, if I let off the gas, and press the brakes, then remove my foot from the brake and then depress the pedal again, the second time I get no power assist and it's quite frightening.

If this were a non-turbo car (one without a vacuum pump), I would suspect the brake booster. But because I have never had a brake booster fail on any of my BMW's so far (thankfully), because they are a pain to replace, are expensive new and questionable used, and because there is another mysterious vital component (the vacuum pump) in the system, I'm seeking the fresh expertise of others.

If anyone has heard of or solved a problem similar to this, please help a brother out.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like the vacuum pump. Put a vacuum gauge on it and see what is going on.

524td vacuum pump.

The specs you need for the vacuum pump are in this thread. Straight from the Ford manual.

Some findings with a vacuum gauge.

Post by ralph524 »

I put a vacuum gauge on one of the nipples of the check valve connected at the vacuum pump.

Measurements are in cm of Hg, measuring vacuum.

at startup w/out pressing accelerator: 6
after light revving: 9-10
@ ~2000 rpm: up to 30, dropping to 9-10 when released
pressing brake: drops to 2

The first time I press the brakes, the vacuum stays at 9-10, if i remove my foot and then press again immediately, the pressure drops to 2.

If I keep my foot on the brake pedal and rev the engine, vacuum rises in coincidence with the pedal moving to the floor.

I'm using a U.S.General compound meter from Harbor Freight.

Please let me know if this means anything to you.

Thanks in advance!

I don't feel like converting centimeters to inches... ;)

Sorry about the units

1 inch is 2.54 cm

So, idle was only 3-4 in Hg
it only reached the minimum allowable of 16 in Hg (40 cm Hg) at >2k revs.

I'm definitely going to look into replacing (or rebuilding??) the vacuum pump.

Thanks for you help so far!

Did you have all of the other vacuum lines plugged when you did this test? You probably don't want to rebuild/replace your vacuum pump if you just have a broken or leaky vacuum line.

tell me about it. Parts Dept hasn't gotten back to me about the price of a new pump, though the list price is something like $471 (94% of what I paid for the car).

All the other vacuum lines are plugged in. I'm going to check things out again as soon as it warms up a little outside.

Getting parts for these cars is a pain.

Check all the plastic lines between the pump nipple and the brake booster. I'd bet that something is leaking...

Parts Dept says $234 from Germany.

Definitely will check all the lines before acting.
