TPS Swap - Manual for Auto

Post by cvillebimmer »

I'm getting close to MS!

I have nearly new auto TPS on my 5spd converted e24 and a manual TPS on the e32. Can anyone help me figure out what's required to swap them and keep both cars running properly?

I've got until Wednesday AM to make the swap and it just occurred to me to do this. I haven't even looked at it yet, but I imagine there is some sort of splicing that needs to be done.

Hope I'm here in time. You will need to do some splicing on both harnesses.

Is the e32 already running on MS? If if isn't, you will need to hook up the swtich part of the auto TPS for the meantime and then re-pin the TPS after MS is installed to take advantage of the variable resistance part of the TPS.

The e32 ETM doesn't seem to differentiate between auto and manual harnesses like the e24 does. Hmmm..

Cut off the e32 manual switch/pigtail. You will have 3 wires attached to the pigtail:

Brown/Blue - Closed throttle
Brown/Black - WOT
Brown/Orange - Ground

Cut off the 6 wire TPS/pigtail on the e24. On the body side of the harness 3 of the wires will remain unused. These are what previously went to the automatic transmission ECU. I heat shrink wrapped mine and tapped if off.

Now, the 3 wires you will use are colored the same as the wires on the pigtail from the e32 TPS. Connect the same color wires to each other. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, just tape off the other 3 wires as they are no longer needed.

Ok, so now the e24 should function just fine with the e32 TPS. If you are just hooking the e24 auto TPS up to the e32 while it is still running M1.3, then you just connect the wires together based on color. If you are hooking it up to get variable resistance, then ask Peter for the pin out he used on the 55 pin connector.

MS used 3 wires for the TPS:

5v reference
The signal itself (input to the ECU)
Ground

Ground should remain the same, but ask Peter what pins on the ECU he is using for the 5V and the signal.

On the e24 auto TPS/pigtail, you will have 3 wires that correspond to the previous functions:

Black- 5V reference
Yellow - TPS Input
Brown/Orange - Ground (this is the same ground that is used if you were using a regular TPS)

Now, you would just connect up the wires based on Peter's pin out.

Its been a long day so I hope this makes sense. Its been a few years since I've had to deal with this. I used the M50 TPS on my e34.

Want to have a look at the harness I snagged? I opened the box but haven't looked over it much.

George, thanks for the write up. I'm sure someone will benefit from it.

The e32 isn't running MS yet, but that's in the works.

The Auto TPS now lives in Tampa, FL with the rest of the car and a happy new owner. Unfortunately, I just ran out of time to make the swap.
