Congrats! That's how my sis got engaged about 3 or 4 years ago. He proposed to her on Valentine's Day.
Me personally, I'm SO glad I don't have to deal with that crap right now!
Enjoying single life. . .

Hi Simon,
Congrats on your engagement!
After 12+ years of marriage, let me suggest a few things to you based on my experiences to date:
BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO HAVE EVEN ONE CHILD....buy as many German cars as your budget allows (wrench on 'em frequently), travel (domestically), move away from the immediate influence of either of your families (3-5 hours drive, minimum), do some camping, hiking, fishing, mountainbike, go to the beach, go to the mountains, party with friends (note: use your best judgement re: illicit substances), travel some more (just do it!), do various other frivolous things (e.g., lear how to play golf), skydive at least once, learn how to pilot an airplane (a single-engine Cessna is a good place to start), travel some more (especially abroad), and essentially soak in all that life has to offer while getting to know each other as human beings and develop your own separate identity from family (and others) as a COUPLE.
Now, that being said....I cannot tell you how fulfilling it is to be a parent. But please take note...becoming a parent will challenge even the closest of relationship bonds. Trust me...I'm a professional. :p
Best wishes!
Tim

After 17 years of marraige, I'd say Tim's advice is excellent. Except we forgot to have the children! ~0
Oh well, we have 7 nieces, 4 nephews, one great niece and great niece twins due in a month... They all treat our house like home away from home (we see a couple of our nieces more than their parents do!).

Simon,
Sorry...after reading your last post forget much of what I've said.
Sounds like you're way ahead of me on the parenting front
My son is only 3 y/o (this March). The age difference sounds like a good one...seems
to be working out just fine for one of my best friends. Personally, I married an "older woman" (by 9-mos...LOL!). We were engaged on St. Patrick's Day in 1991, married in June of 1992! She continues to be the love of my life, my best friend, and the mother of the most precious person in the world to me, our son
Plus...she tolerates my obsession with German cars and vintage Hi-Fi
Cheers,
Tim

Simon,
Congrats to you and your future Bride.
Tim in N. FL offers alot of good advice in his first post, especially about being some distance from your respective families, ie; In-Laws. I think the fact that my wife an I have lived at elast 1000 miles from our families since we've been married has helped our marriage. It forces you to depend on each other for support, vs the tendency for some women who run home everytime something doesn't go their way. I also experience quite a bit of stress when we do go back to Phx. There's always this expectation that I have to be too many places at one time.
I've been married for 28 Years and it gets better every year.
Rich
