Vista and MS

I'd been running MS2 using my new laptop (Vista) and had some wierd issues, i.e. VE Live would not work right, nor would several other tuning functions. Today I hooked up a desk top with XP and it worked fine.

Is anyone else having issues with this?

Have you set no authority restrictions on the application w/ vista?
It can be a real Nazi OS when it comes to that shit.

Yesterday was patch day. Automatic updates can change things, especially with Vista.

Bill, google "UAC Vista" or "User Account Control Vista" and turn it all off. As Shadow mentioned, it can cause some issues.

Are you using a hard wired serial port or one that connects through a USB dongle? USB serial port dongles are the worst in my experience, it's a real crap shoot whether they'll work at all. If you are using one, go to the manufacturer's website and see if there's any updated drivers for it.

I'll be the first one to admit that I am not well versed with computers. That being said, I'm learning a lot as I go and the more I read, the more I am coming to believe that this laptop is probably not well suited for MS. Too, the fact that it does not have a serial port and I've a USB adapter makes for more issues.

The specs of the laptop are more than adequate to run MS, however the processor score is 19031, more than 5x slower than that of the tower I used that runs XP.

I'm going on the hunt for another unit that has a serial port and runs XP, dedicating it to nothing more than running MS and leaving in the car.

Anyone got a laptop they want to get rid of?

FWIW I tune using a USB dongle, it's a cheap brand-x one from micro center. The vast majority of them out there now will work with MS.

Be sure to adjust the buffer settings as per the megamanual (just under 1/2 way down)

If you use a USB adapter, be SURE to set the buffer size to ZERO (0). You can change this in the Control Panel, look under 'System, Hardware, Device Manager'. The default buffer size for these adapters is typically 14 bytes. If this is the case with yours and you left the default, you would have no control over the data flow no matter what else you do.

This is the same in Windows 7, I haven not tried vista yet though. Kind of a long shot, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

What I was planning on doing is making an xp live cd /thumb drive loaded with the proper drivers and tuned studio etc. As I am running MAC right now and VMWare is acting funny. It's a nice way of switching a laptop to xp temporarily to tune and not losing your current setup. (its only because I dislike Vista being a nanny and I like messing with OS's).

For a simple attempt I would say disable uac, run as administer, and change cache size as already mentioned. If you just can't get it to work maybe someone else or I can make a live cd for you.

I run win XP on my mac and use a serial adapter.

I gave up on Vista after trying countless "fixes" and bought an old Dell Latitude. There have been no issues since.
