86 535i exhaust

Post by 344i »

I have a question, I am rebuilding the exhaust on my 535. I installed new header seals, bolts, nuts, new downpipes, with new seals bolts and nuts and a used rear exhaust section , the two rear mufflers, mint.

The stock exhaust has a y pipe, the o2 sensor and a cat. They are rotted and I am removing them.

Can i run twin pipes from the downpipes to the mufflers, and cut the 02 into that? or does the car need a y pipe? the Cat is not necessary here, due to age. Thanks!

Stock on 535s was twin pipes all the way, but common in the cat. 533s used two into one into two again, post cat. Moosehead was just saying recently something about this, that you could end up with some odd problems if you just sampled one bank of 3 cylinders and not all 6. My guess is if everything is well, it would be fine, but if things got off a little, they could get way off.

That's what i'm thinking, i'm gonna have to y pipe to a single 2.5" 3" it to the 02 sensor and then y pipe it back into two 1 7/8"s again.
