I am selling my 535i. I've had it since 2007 when I bought it from Vancouver. It's been a great car and I am sad to let it go. But, I recently bought an e34 wagon so this one's got to go. Mechanically the car needs nothing. All the important stuff has been done. I think the list below pretty much sums up the car.
Eddy
Recent Maintenance:
-New upper and lower control arms (Jan 2010)
-Rebuilt oil pump (Jan 2010); oil light goes out in <2s when the car is started
-New oil pan gasket (Jan 2010)
-New heater core (Jan 2010)
-New power steering return hoses (Jan 2010); no leaks
-New power steering filter (Jan 2010)
-New shifter parts, (Jan 2010); no more sloppiness
-Re-lubricated the windshield washer motor and wiper linkage (Jan 2010); they work very well
-New rear subframe bushings (2009); painted the subframe with POR-15
-New flywheel sensors (2009); both of them
-New hood shocks (2009); she holds steady.
-New rear Bilstein HD shocks, new shock mounts, and spring pads (2008)
-New H4 headlights (2008); the lowbeams have X-Pel protectors on them.
-New differential mount (2007)
-New fan clutch (2007)
-New steering idler arm (2007)
-New front brake pads (2007); rotors were within spec.
The Good:
-Despite the mileage, the engine is in excellent shape. Does not blow smoke or leak oil. The engine is VERY powerful and responsive, way better than my other e28! I’m serious, this engine is awesome. It idles smooth and has tons of power.
-Bavarian Autosport DME chip
-Front strut brace (brand? I don’t know.)
-The interior is in good condition
-Front airdam and rear spoiler from a 535is
-Limited slip 3.25:1 differential. Highway cruiser special.
-Bilstein HD shocks all around.
-Cool roof-mounted radio antenna
-A spare set of wheels. The summer wheels are 15” style 5 wheels with summer tires (~20% tread).
-Stebro cat-back exhaust with euro downpipes. It’s a loud exhaust, but it’s stainless and expensive!
-Newer Ford (Bosch) injectors
-Nice big sunroof
-H4/H1 headlights. They are awesome; way better than sealed beams.
-The heat. The new heater core seriously cranks out the BTUs.
-Clean CarFax. Let me know if you want a copy of the one I pulled in 2008. The important part is that this car has never been in a crash. And the mileage is correct!
The Bad:
-The car has some rust. I have spent a huge amount of time hunting it down and doing repairs on it. There is a lot of POR-15, some fibreglass, and some undercoating on the car. As it sits now I have neutralized all of the bad spots – they shouldn’t go any further. But as with any car this age, there is always more. Always. No matter how hard you look there’s always more. Realistically I would say that the car has at least 3 more salty winters (or lots of summers) in its lifetime.
-No A/C. When I bought the car it didn’t work. I took it out when I did the heater because it would have been very expensive to upgrade to R134a.
-Crappy old Sony tape deck. It was probably great in the early ‘90s. The radio works well and it comes with a cassette aux. Input for your iPod.
-The rear defrost doesn’t work.
-The fog lights are out of commission. One is missing. These are still available new.
Good things for winter driving:
-Block heater (Nov 2008)
-New heater core (Jan 2010); blows real hot.
-Michelin X-Ice tires on 15” steel wheels (lots of tread left)
-Rear mudflaps (new in 2008)
-Heated seats
-Sheepskin seat covers (warm!)
-Limited slip differential 3.25:1 (good traction in the snow)
-Front strut brace (helps avoid big cracks in the windshield!)
