need help with brake upgrade on 535i please

Post by eliotkb »

im trying to help a friend out with my old car that i sold to him...

previous to my ownership, someone had upgraded the front brakes and we're trying to determine what brakes were used. i guess my question is... are e32 750iL brakes the most common brake upgrade for e28s?

the caliper is stamped 60 28 135 and the rotor i'm told is 12" in dia.

i would figure the "most popular upgrade" is probably the culprit.

thanks for the help guys... its been awhile

Chris kohler has advised me that the general upgrade is the 735i front brakes for the front, calipers and pads, and rears are 740i calipers, pads, and 540i rotors.

You can compare part numbers on realoem.com

315 is the rotor diameter in mm. Those are US E34 M5 brakes. That should be all the info you need to find pads, rotors, and rebuild kits.

I am curious what the 60/28/315 code all means?

Piston size, rotor thickness, rotor diameter?

the problem was that i bought this car from eliotkb, but we didnt know what type of brakes it had.

I need to replace them, so i bought the rotors/pads corresponding to the 535. then i took a wheel off to compare rotors i notice the ones i got were smaller than the ones it had.

not knowing much about the car and it's history made it hard for me to figure out what kind of brakes it had.

thank you for the quick response.

now i need to return the ones i bought and get the right ones

Lol, don't forget rotating mass.

As the discussion points out, M5 rotors are 315mm diameter vs your BBK at 302mm diameter.
