Brake fluid in driver footwell

Post by NoM54me »

Hello, I have a 1984 533i with a bit over 250k miles. I recently replaced the clutch master cylinder (6 months ago...) because it was leaking brake fluid into the driver footwell. The new master didn't leak, but now has in the past week, oddly coinciding with a snap of bitter cold temperatures lately. My driver footwell carpet is always damp from the fluid and the bit of moisture it draws. Hard to thoroughly clean out.

Also, in order to get into reverse, first, or second gears, I have to push the clutch pedal hard to the floor, and convince the shifter that it want to go into those gears. Not quite so bad when it's warmed up a bit.

Clutch slave cylinder?

Opinions?

Sounds like your clutch master is hosed and is likely bad due to a cracked pedal bracket.

X2

Replace both. Probably want to consider reinforcing the pedal bracket you install as a fix. That way you'll never have to do it again (at least in theory).

Or....you may have a cracked hose connection (that part is plastic) on the master allowing air into the system that will not allow the slave to fully engage...which in turn may cause failure in the master. The pedal bracket is about $45.
