Toolin' down the road and the ABS & charging lights on the dash go on. When you get home you notice antifreeze dripping underneath the car. What the heck, now what?!

So I start looking underneath the car for the source of the leak, hmmm, seems to be coming from a hose in the left front wheelwell. Trace the hose...ah...it's the overflow hose from the radiator.

Now the question is, why would it overflow? Must be too much pressure in the system, but why?

If you haven't guessed it by now, the fan belt for the water pump and alternator broke.

I need to get a new one today, my son wants to borrow the car for prom tomorrow, but I'm not sure of the part number. Is it 11231706668?

The local Autozone says they carry that part. Should I go with Autozone or OEM?

Thanks.

528e alternator belt is 9.5 mm x 965 mm.
535i alternator belt is 12.5 mm x 1040 mm, according to the www.bavauto.com site.

Buy two, then you'll have a spare. ;)

If it'd been a 528e and he'd thrown the belt for the waterpump, he'd have more problems than just finding a new belt since timing belt in a 528e drives the water pump as well. Helllloooo interference motor! ;)

Just a little FYI.

The eta water pump is driven by the alternator belt, not the timing belt. I've lost mine before.

Okay, got the new belt in hand.

Now I'm looking at what has to come off to replace this belt.

It looks like the AC belt and power steering pump belt need to come off first.

Is there anything else I should remove to make this go smoothly?

Thanks.

Hmmmm . . . You're probably right. It's been a long friggin' week (I'm considering giving notice soon) and I remembered changing the timing belt along with my water pump when I did it. I do remember the timing belt went around something else besides the cam and the crank . . . I guess it was probably the tensioner? I was still in HS when I did it.

Good call though, my mistake. I'm kinda suprised nobody else called me on it now that I think about it, lol.
