I suspect this is a nice car and John is a good man. He was not comfortable with giving me his account information so the purchase never happened because I insisted on wire transfer to protect me.

No PPI??? I'm sure the seller has absolutely nothing to hide! That sort of attitude certainly instills plenty of confidence in prospective purchasers.

There's a bunch of Florida members that live in the Tampa area who I am sure would gladly check out an M5 for you.. I know I would if it were closer to my part of the state!

M5 in Tampa

Post by edlocke »

I'm looking into buying this car. I've been in touch with the owner several times, lots of pics sent, plus I've talked to the shop who did a pre-buy for someone else. They said it was a very nice driver. They mentioned it maybe needing a 1-2k in work but nothing big.
Here's what I'm afraid of regarding this car......the owner has NO RECORDS. He has the maintenance book for oil changes and services but NO MECHANICAL REPAIR RECORDS, not one. He has a retired BMW mechanic friend doing service on it presently.....I'm not digging that.
One of the biggest items every buy article says about these cars is the GET THE HISTORY of the car. Owner said the history wasn't a big deal to him.

M5 update

Post by edlocke »

Wednesday I will have a PPi done with a 3rd party shop. I'm requesting a leak-down and compression test. I'm happy with the way the car shows, but still would like to have the history of course which I guess is lost for ever?
Car checks out clean on CARFAX and the miles are true with all the yearly checks for emmisions. I plan on flying down maybe tomorrow and driving back home Wed if all checks out.

PS. It does have a draw which takes the battery down dead within 2 weeks if left without a charger on. :(

Just trying to look out for one of the few nice E28 M5s left. Drop the turbo into any other E28. igotbank still has a rolling chassis for sale, I believe.

PPI came off excellent

Post by edlocke »

Here's the tale on the PPI:

1. Compression 14.5 to 15.5 Bar across all cylinders with matching arches.
2. "NO RUST, not even a speck on any of the body or chassis" mechanic exact words.
3. Original paint in excellent condition, no fading.
4. Driver seat has slight wear, no rips, passenger side head rest inop.
5. inside/outside is very very clean.
6. dent in fuel flap.
7. paint on front spoiler is missing in a few spots.
8. tires 90%
9. rear shocks converted with Billy's and springs.
10. AC has a very slight leak but blows ice cold.
11. power steering pump has a drop leak.
12. Trannie shift shaft seal has small leak.
13. needs muffler gasket, and rear of muffler rust is forming.
14. slight valve cover leak.
15. ignition wires will need replacing as it looks like squirrel or mouse has had lunch on #2 wire.
16. Mechanic said you could drive this car anywhere.
If you guys don't mind I'd like to install a set of Black Euro bumpers, euro lights, Eibach springs, and short shift.

Dont forget to change those knock-off E39 M5 rims to something more period appropriate. Looks like a nice score Ed. Keep us posted when you get her. I thought I had the deal closed on this one and ended up being $1500 short of getting the one Ron just sold. I must be losing my mojo.

Clean M5

Post by edlocke »

Just went thru Jacksonville, flew down this morning first fight. I was driving back at 1015am, I should be home around 930.
This is sooooo clean, drives like a new car super tight. I'm very pleased! Wow I finally got my M5!
