Pinstriping and "M" badges do not make your 535is an "M535is". ;)
If it is a NA (Noth American) delivery car it is most likely the result of a session of "badge engineering".

The M535 was a recognized and available model designation in Europe (and maybe elsewhere in the world) and they generally had the "Mtech" suspension and any other equipment/options the buyer specified.
The NA cars were more "batch built" with most all the options already on them. Some special equipment was installed at the delivery ports and/or at the dealerships.

You can find answers to most all of your questions if you click on the Search icon at the top of every screen right below the y in MyE28.com and invest a little time. ;)

There was a 535is sold in the US (and Canada?), and an M535i sold in Europe (plus Japan and I think Australia.) There's a good description of the M535i here: http://www.m535i.org/e28info.html

The M535i is essentially a Euro 535i with some tupperware, sport seats, an optional suspension, different steering wheel and a few other nuances. It's essentially the first badge engineering exercise by BMW's ///M division.

The 535is is a US model based on the 535i. The cars came in Zinnoberrot, Alpineweiß, Diamantschwarz, Lachssilber and RoyalBlau. They had electric sport seats, a front airdam, a rear spoiler and different shock absorbers. They had no separate VIN range.

///M badges are available on eBay and from your local BMW center. They will stick to anything, including a 535is.

Not true. Additionally, the paramedic told me if I tried again with a stronger adhesive, I'd probably lose the use of my penis.
