Hello All,

When I purchased my 535iS 5 years ago a new receiver dryer
was installed. The coolant or Freon is 134A, it does get cold,
the thermometer I have in the center vent records 41 degrees. I
think thats cold, but here in Southern California it has not reached
the high 80's that we regularly see.

What coolant / freon are you using.
R12, R22, 134A, R502, or ARI-700 ?
Are you happy with the performance
your getting with the coolant / freon ?
and what temperature are you getting in the car ?

TIA
Robbie

R12 ,getting 36 degrees on a 90 degree day on humid day in central Ga at normal speeds. Humidity and outside temp and cooling fan speed and or car speed will have a bearing on outlet temp.
BTW,41 is good for r134. Some e28 cars have bigger condensors than others and will thus cooler better, esp when r134 is used

My euro was converted to r134 and went back to r12. Made a big difference in the Texsas sun!
Yes the condenser is bigger than on other models, but still not efficient enoughf for r134 requirements. IMHO
I know 3X the price !@#$

one option would be fridge C (think that is the name). It is a hybrid between r12 and r134 and will work in a r12 system without changing anything. I had my 83 Turbo ZX converted to it and it worked really well. Also much cheaper than r12. Just food for thought.

I converted my E28 to R134 a couple years ago - just replaced the receiver/dryer and screwed on the adapter fittings. I see low 40F temps at the center vents on a 90+ degree day as long as the car is moving.

Converted an E30 also at about the same time and see mid-40F temps. No problem with either conversion.

Also had an E23 for a few months one summer - it had been converted to 134 and had a full charge. Never really go cold, even at highway speeds.

sorry to jump in...but what do you guys think about "freeze 12"? my friends neighbor who's a mechanic told me that i can substitute that since there are no longer shops in my area (as far as i know) that has r12.
my '87 535is isnt converted yet. the compressor engages and the aux fan turns on but no cold air.

I had my former E28 converted from R12 to R134, I never had any issues with it being cold - the R134 felt just as cold as the R12 in the dead of the 100 Florida summer, as far as I was concerned - and that was with a nice sticky dark blue (dried out) leather interior, too.

My new E28 is R134 already, while I haven't seen a really hot summer yet, it seems plenty cold enough the couple of times I've run it on warm days so far - although I will say, the tan interior seems to keep notably cooler so far in general than the blue interior did.
