WSJ Article.
"This 1965 Volkswagen bus was bound for Germany when customs agents seized it at the port of Los Angeles in October, 35 years after it was reported stolen in Spokane, Wash."

I sure like those old buses! I love the way the front windows open on some model/years. (called safari windows).
Would have to address the 38 horsepower at some point in order to make it drivable. Maybe a later turbo 911 powerplant?

That's really cool. I also happen to know the guy that redid it.

Love the GD allusion in the article's title.

Do you know if the guy has any claim (for his costs) against the ins company (new owners) since they get to sell it for a premium?

I have no idea. I haven't talked to him. One of my auto-x friends told me about it on Sun. We both know the guy.

There are a couple of other "time capsules" hidden in the old photo in the WSJ article. You can see the nose of '68/'69 Firebird to the left of the van, and a '65/'66 Mustang parked on the other side of the street.
Three vehicles that were commonplace in the '70's and worth considerable bucks now (if they were survivors!)
PS: Did anyone else notice that the original owner gal is still employed at the same restaurant as in '74? You don't see that often anymore!

Cool story.
The happy ending would be for Allstate to allow her to buy it back for the $2,500,
provided she hasn't cashed the check yet.

She probably cashed that check back in the 70s. It would be good PR for them to sell it back to her for that price (maybe adjusted for 2009 dollars.)
