I learned you can't win wars with a manual in your hand vs someone who already knows the knowledge. Just looking out for you ;)

I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just trying to help. When this guy gets his car going and his IAT's are shooting past 150 by the top of second gear, he will know why. No need to cut out frame rails for a bigger intercooler when a more efficient cooler of the same size would probably do the trick.

I hope he did for the value of another learning experience on the board. Each install has it's pros/cons.

Whether success or failure, his endeavor will not taint "this forum". Isn't it all about knowledge sharing?

What is that supposed to mean? I am interested in seeing if it's been installed and how it's holding up.

Edited with smiley, wasn't meant to be serious lol. Didn't mean to sound like a jerk about it.

I changed the head gasket and found a slightly cracked head, I believe due to overheating. It's running fine NA but it will not hold up to FI. I'm hitting the yards and craigslist for an i top end. But the car is being used as a daily driver as of late, so I have to find another project car. We're on indefinite hold on this, but rest assured I will do this eBay turbo build and I will post the results. Thanks for the interest.

interesting thread i would have like to see how it turned out.

just on a side note... i havent really experienced any really hot days yet but 15c when testing during the day and the hottest intake temps i have seen with my intercooler was 80f or about a 10c tempurature jump after bombing around for a while tuning, using a 18x12x3 end cap bottom entry intercooler running 7psi

That does look like a crack from here, but that is a bad picture.

Either way, if you can afford an ebay turbo kit you can afford a new head. Time to do some work...

I mucked with the contrast and brightness to show in the picture what you can really only see in person. There is a crack at each water jacket on either side of that head bolt hole, and you can see what I would call a "slight crack" or the beginnings of a more serious crack connecting the two water jacket cracks - following the radius of the bolt hole about a centimeter out. This suggests soemthing tried hard to separate the block from the head and stressed the head along the bolt holes.

You may also note how pitted the flat portion of the combustion chamber is. All six chambers show this type of damage, some of the worse than this one. The previous (orignal) owner's records don't show what calamity transpired, but those pistons munched on some metal at some point.

The motor will get a full rebuild, or at least the car will get a fully rebuilt motor whichever block I wind up using. Tell me, Dan, can I use aluminum foil for bearings and zip ties instead of rod bolts? ;)

PS Head with cam is ~$30 at pick-your-part during 50% off sale. You just have to keep going back until you find one that hasn't been destryoed by a timing belt or "Cash for Clunker"ed.
