Feedback on :NEX: coilovers

Post by skip535i »

Found these on eGay...anyone have any firsthand experience? I am considering coilovers and if this is actually half the price of the Ground Control kit and isn't crappy then yipee.

LMK, KTHXBAI.

What I find odd is they don't specify which brand/model of shock it comes with. I researched some other setups with this product, they seem to come with max speed springs. The trend is everybody saying the quality is amazing, which they look like they are.

Here are some pics of these coil-overs from a guy on the bimmerforums.

I have Ground-Control on my car and I can not recommend them to anyone. They are the worst company I have ever dealt with.

I have replaced parts of my coilovers with Ireland Engineering parts to make my coilovers work for the street.

The NEX look pretty good. They look like the have used the front top strut bearing mount and that would make a for a good feel through the steering wheel.

It also looks like you could add Ireland Engineering camber plates for some extra negative camber.

They also look like they are made well.

The ony way your going to know is buy a set.

Keep us informed.

Maybe I missed in the ebay ad, I assume I can specify preferred spring rates? Or do they just have a set rate?

Seems like they have a set rate, which I can't seem to find.

JonK's car is unmistakable. Last year he put on a set of Drag-Lites just for a photo and everyone on bimmernut went fangirl all over it.

He's an invaluable source of information on turbo and megasquirt setups... reall nice guy. That drop looks pretty sick too.

Under the "Tech Specs," they say:

TECH SPECS

Spring rate : Front 8kg
Spring rate : Rear 6kg

So, someone doesn't know what they're talking about. 6kg is a little over 13 pounds, which would be somewhere in the helper spring realm.

I'm thinking this is a "You get what you pay for" kinda deal.

Those would be rated in kg/mm. I have those same rates on my 240sx.
That would be
440lb/in F
335lb/in R

Well, that makes a bunch more sense now.

I wonder if they use the standard 2" springs like ground control, so that you could swap out different spring heights/rates. Still curious about the type of damper they use, that may be where they cut corners/costs.

Now it makes sense, at first glance, being such a low number I assumed it was the actual physical spring weight. That would be a pretty good spring rate IMO.

There are some guys on Vwvortex that said they used the Ground control springs. Not sure if the E28 coilovers are the same size.

Im getting a set in Feb so I'll be posting up a thread on the install and First thoughts.

You can use stock struts, with like ireland adjustable perches and some 8" 2.5OD springs, adn do it even cheaper.

A user here has a set that he had to mess with to work.

From what i can understand is that he had to modify the front struts just as you do with the GC's to make them fit. Seams like his threaded collar was out of round which is lame, but other than that it sounds like the same things you must do if you buy from ground control.

I sold a set of strut housings to the OP of the linked thread and when we met up, he explained that the threaded perch is nowhere near the right diameter for the strut tube. In my opinion, this is one of those products that is not worth wasting money on. Save a little longer and get something better...and an aggregate protective plate from yours truly.
