Hi there, new member here.

I currently own '87 535is which I love like no other car unless it's 535is with manual. The car has 216K on the clock and runs great. The problem is: when I start the car it would go down to like 400 RPM for a second, then jump up to about 800, then down to 400 again and to 1000. It stays there for a few minutes, but sometimes untill I shift to D or R. Note, I always warm up my car for like 5 minutes before I go. Any help with that weird behavior on the start up? I don't find a pattern, it seems to be independent from temperature and humidity outside.

Thanks in advance!

Clean and readjust your throttle body, and then reset your TPS switch. Worked for me. I had the exact same problem. Beyond that, make sure your engine is in good tune, ie - valve adjust, plugs, rotor, cap, etc.

Everything Derek suggested, and maybe the coldstart valve--a new one really helped my car.

Thank you! I did valve adjustment, changer plugs, rotor and cap when I bought the car (3K ago). Will check into throttle body.

Still the same. Adjusted TPS switch, throttle body looks clean. Seems like it depends from humidity. Raining today and it does not behave too well. How much is a cold valve?

A CSV is about 15-20 bucks, but it is a real pita to change. I would expect 1-2 hours to replace, be sure to get new bolts as well. So to get back to the problem, some questions from me.
1. Does it only do this while cold?
2. Does it stumble while driving down the road?
3. Have you check all the vacume, and rubber componets under the hood?
4. Check your dipstick, and oil cap for a good seal.

1. Does it only do this while cold? Haven't figured out any pattern yet.
2. Does it stumble while driving down the road? No.
3. Have you check all the vacume, and rubber componets under the hood? Look good when I checked unless I missed something.
4. Check your dipstick, and oil cap for a good seal. Replaced them with brand new ones when I bought the car.

Thanks!

So the bottom line is that it doesn't do this all the time? If you have a bently, there is the CSV thermo time switch that could be faulty as well.

uhhhmn, check fuse 6 or 7 , outboard most fuse in front row. This powers the idle control. With it it removed , the idle surges and backs off. Lower voltage caused by dirty contacts has a similar but less dramatic effect

When you adjusted the TPS was this done with a multimeter or simply by listening for the click sound?

If it's the former you may have a defective TPS.

Forget the Fuse 6 or 7 tip, that's only for 528e and the older 533i which had Idle Control Modules.

When checking the intake bellows, was this a simple visual check or did you flex the bellows and check for cracks in the valleys of the pleats ?? The intake bellows should be fairly supple and flexible, if it's hard as rock, it's toast.

Check the resistance of the Coolan Temperature Sensor if you haven't done so. SPecs are in the Bentley for resistance values.

Thanks all for suggestions. Tonight it started just fine; still raining. So I guess humidity doesn't really matter.

Adjusted TPS just going by click. How do I adjust it with multimeter?

No crack were found.

Coolant T sensor was replaced a few months ago.

Thank you!

Any step by step instructions on how to remove the CSV from the intake manifold.

I can see the CSV and bolts but am having trouble accessing the bolt heads.

Thanks
