The Wifes 86 535i took a hit yesterday. I got distracted making a left turn and didn't look. The A-Pillar got bent in, the right front wheel well is bent real bad, car will toss and turn with every bump on the road. Both passenger side doors are toast. But the glass and mirrors are still good. I only have liability so my insurance will pay for the car I turned in front of and not mine. My wife and 2 year old are fine and the other car the passengers were fine as well.

Anyway, I've got a parts car located in central VT now. Let me know what parts you want. I'm not sure if the rim got bent or not, but the bottle cap cover is mashed in. So I've got 7 good bottle cap wheels and 1 good trx spare tire.
If anybody wants parts call me and we can work out a deal. I won't have time to strip the car until mid may, after classes are over and I start my summer job.
The engine in my 85 325e is getting weaker and weaker so it's time to get rid of that one. All I need really is a manual transmission. and what ever else is involved in the swap. Has anybody done this here? I'm starting my reasearch on roachfly and some other places on the internet. I'm just curious as to what the cost of the swap is so I can see if it's worth it to me. Unless I come across another E28 ( a 524td would be most ideal right now) in the right pricerange I'll do the swap.

Thanks.

It's not so much how $$$$$ but how much time. The swap is really involved I am in the process of doing another, with the M30B35

With 2 mechanics, myself, and a guy working on the rust on the body, can it be done in a 2 day, 3 day, or 4 day weekend? My 2 buds work for local shops and ae in the process of rebuilding an old international pickup truck. The guy that would do the body work just needs a place to sleep and some pizza and beer and he's good. I've done a few favors for him so he doens't need $$$. The other two I can give them each a couple hundred to help out. It'd be nice to do 8 - 12 hrs days, depends on how long the beer holds out. But after 2 days I think we all would get burnt out. It'd be nice to do it in less than 4 days. I can get 3 day weekends easier than a 4 day weekend.

Mine cost $3000, including engine tranny and all parts. The thing that takes time is gathering parts, remember you need an E34/e32 oil pan, pump, and what not to fit the m30 into the e30. Actual swap time it took me 4 days to yank the m20, prep the engine bay, drop in the m30, and get it all tucked in.

My parts bin will be www.theeurodepot.com they are less than 100 miles 1 way and ups shipping is 2 days from there. I've also noticed that an 87 325e driveshaft is needed.

What did you do for the motor mounts? Do you have a list of the parts you consumed/used in this operation?

Not sure what differiential I'll use, I've got the stock one for the 85 325e (open diff) and the stock one from the 86 535i(lsd). Is it easy to swap the ring and pinion into the lsd case? or don't bother?

I am in need of a manual transmission. Any leads?

Thanks

what did you do for a tachometer? The Tach in the eta only goes to 5K RPM.

Did you do any mods to the suspension in the front? Bigger sway bars from the m3? polyurethane bushings?

What parts are needed for the motronic 1.3 conversion? I may as well do it all at once.

I'm thinking about replacing things on the engine. I have no idea how many miles are on it. Bought the car w/ broken odo meter and I've put 20K on it in 18 months. Had a compression test done in aug and all cylinders were within 5 psi of each other.

Are there inexpensive prevenativie things I should do to the engine internals/externals before stuffing it in the e30?

What did you do for engine mounts and transmission mounts?

Thanks

Yes I used a 325e driveshaft, it will bolt right up if the engine is in position 3 ussing the motor mounts from e30.de, I used e30 m20 rubber motor mounts and tranny mounts. I replaced all the gaskets, and drivetrain bolts wear items doing the swap. I swapped it into a 325is so no tach changes needed. I'm the same person you're emailing off roadfly just incase you didn't realize :p
As for suspension I put in a 21mm bar with m3 links, and a m3 bar in the rear. I already have the car lowered.

Yeah, I've been a little slow, lots going on, spring break ended and then dealing with the car and picked a friend up at the airport and he lost his wallet while deplaning so that's a bit crazy calling every number for ID's and credit cards.

I'm gonna keep doing some research, I've found a site on putting a 325i tach into a 325e cluster. It's pretty straight forward. I'm still not 100% if I'll do the swap. If I get the job I'm hoping for, then I'll do it. If not, I'll be parting out the entire car and the engine and transmission will go too.

I would like to do some things if I do the swap. I've been reading up on crank scrapers. Not sure if they really work or not. I'm also deciding on what intake to use, be it the E12, E21, or even the E34 intakes. And what camshaft. I want to do it right and have good results and do the while you're at it stuff with the engine out.

I still need a 5 speed transmission for this swap. They look rather pricey compared to what E30 transmissions go for. If you have any leads on one let me know.

Thanks

E12 intake is the worst, with the E21 runner's it's a little better, 3.3/3.4 is better, 3.5 is the best but only if it's put on a port matched 3.3/3.4 head or a B35 head.
