Thanks Guys- Re: my e28 shakes under braking

Post by SemiSilentBob »

Guys,
I took the e28 to my tech at European Performance in Delaware and he confirmed that the shimmy was exactly what was suggested in my original thread, Really scored rotors and shot upper control arm bushings. Brakes on the way from Bavauto for install on Saturday.
I've done brakes on my old e46 and other cars so I know I can handle that job but I also need to do the upper control arms and I need some advice from the board.
My shop will replace the bushings on the control arms for $300.00 including parts and labor. I can order both the arms with the bushings for $188.00 from Bavauto and do the install myself IF, and this is the big IF it is a job that can be done with the car on ramps and without any special tools. I get new arms instead of just bushings and save some money (and that is a key factor right now).
What would you guys suggest? Is there a walk-through on how to do this with lots of big pictures that a novice can follow with success, or should I just have the shop do it?

Thanks for the advice in advance guys,
Bob

Those $188 arms from BavAuto will not last. Call them and ask for pricing on Lemforder or Meyle arms with heavy duty (750) bushings.

Been there, done that, with those "standard" BavAuto arms in the past. :?

I think you'll find this most helpful with the UCA job...courtesy of Rod.

V1,
This is awesome! Thanks for pointing me here I'm sure that it will help me with the control arms.

I did the front brakes Saturday and the shaking is gone but I still need to do the arms since the bushings are shot.

The old rotors looked like total crap and there was major rust between the inner and outer surface.

Quite welcome, although the real thanks go to Rod.

I love this site because I learn so much about a car I love.

Pass it on.

I remember speaking to Rod about his site and at the time he sounded like it wasn't going to last long... so I printed off every useful page on the site and made a maintenance book out of it. It's like down to earth full of pics Bentley manual.

Did you grease the guide pins on the calipers? That one rotor looks like the pad wasn't pressing against it on one side, probably only moving on the piston side. Something was likely bound up and contributing to your shimmy.
