New Daily Driver Just Arrived (Update 11-6)
Well, it's 1.09am in the morning, I have to be at work at 8am, I have to work a double shift, so I won't get off until 2am sunday. Why am I up?
My new car arrived, Eric Q. just rolled into town with a Euro 735i for me. It's off the trailer and safely put away for the evening, and pictures will be posted as soon as I can. It's totally awesome.

It's now 10:45 and I slept well.
I've brought yet another person to the dark side (hey Mike, when you gonna come back???).
Sherman, he told me last night he had to go to work at 8am!!!

Oh, I don't think so, I mean I'm giving away good parts now...
E23s were good cars, a more stable platform than E28s IMHO, except of course their achilles heel, the dreaded vacuum controlled HVAC. Actually the whole climate control system, but the vacuum servos were the worst part. Good front ends though, never a shimmy in the 40-50K we put on them.
Lots of early ones like Bavs didn't have sunroofs. And I'm always appalled at cars that don't have them, kind of like not having A/C, I can't believe people buy cars without sunroofs. And I have passed on BMWs thru the years because they didn't have sunroofs, mine gets used oh, 10, no probably more like 20X the amount the windows get used.ElGuappo wrote:I left last night at 1:30, its a great car...
Logan had to work at 8am, so I don't see pics coming till at least early evening at best peeps...
Its SO weird to look inside a BMW withOUT a sunroof...
You guys are jerks. I just got home from work and am about to head out to work another 8 hours at my other job. That's why there were no pics. I just took some and here they are. The car was an automatic, but Eric included all the bits to swap it over to a g265/6.

The car does not have the dreaded HVAC system, it's got a manual setup. It does not even have an OBC. I got black cloth electric comfort seats that were original to it along with some manual cloth sports seats and the matching manual center console!
Below is the sort of direction I want to go with it:

I've already got a line on some style 5s and it'll either be BMW Mtech Springs or coilovers.

Very Sexy!!!! I am pretty sure I saw this car last time I was at David's place (ecartoys) It was just a couple of months ago. It is really nice! I love Alpineweiss e23's! More pics soon!
Welcome to the Dark Side derrith, you won't look back.

It is still vacuum actuated!derrith wrote: The car does not have the dreaded HVAC system, it's got a manual setup.
Elaborate please? I was under the assumption that this system would not be subject to the many and varied failure points that the automatic US system is. Or is it just a less common mess of things?Corner Carver wrote:Very Sexy!!!! I am pretty sure I saw this car last time I was at David's place (ecartoys) It was just a couple of months ago. All e23's have these systems. The fresh air flaps and the heater control and the like are all the vacuum actuators. These have diaphragms that are subject to failing from getting old and dry. When the single stage actuators go bad you can rebuild them, but when the double stage go bad just replace. All are fed via rubber vacuum lines. The thumb wheels have micro switches that go bad and plastic tabs that break off.derrith wrote:Elaborate please? The good news? You only have about half the amount of things that can fail as a car with the fully automated HVAC system so it is much easier to troubleshoot.
No matter, you are going to love the car anyway!
BTW you should up grade to the 745 front sway bar, you will love the way the car handles in the twisties
Well, according to Eric the heat and fresh air works properly, but the AC doesn't. Once I get the car running properly and the other pertinent drivability-related issues sorted, I'll tackle the beast in the center console.Corner Carver wrote:All e23's have these systems. Measure the sway bar so you can determine what you have. If it's 27mm, then you've got the biggest front stock bar. If not, any later US 733i/735i should have this bar and it will go in. In fact, I think I have one in the garage...Corner Carver wrote:All e23's have these systems. The fresh air flaps and the heater control and the like are all the vacuum actuators. To help the handling, you want to weld in the rear sway bar mounts on the rear subframe and put in the rear 745i bar (I think it's 16mm).
On the rear bar, make sure you get the right one. When I had an E23 I made the nice score (or so I thought) of a rear bar. From an early 745. Only to find out when I went to install it there was an early and late, and I had a late car (83 and later) with an early bar. F/S if anyone's interested (yeah, right, LOL)Eric Q wrote:Measure the sway bar so you can determine what you have. If it's 27mm, then you've got the biggest front stock bar. BTW Logan, nice score, it looks good. And if it has the vacuum servos, just get new ones if you need them, I made the mistake of using P and P parts on mine and had ones I'd replaced go bad.

The change came in 1982. Basically, if the diff looks like an E28 diff (different rear cover) then it's the right car. Or if it's not a shark nose. Or if it's a US model with Motronic. Or...
