e34 wiring harness variations

Post by Nebraska_e28 »

Found an e34 at the salvage yard & and am thinking about pulling the harness for my MS build. I vaguely recall someone mentioning there were 2 types of e34 (or e32) harnesses & one of them made wiring for MS much more tricky as you had to account for some additional wires that were in there. Does anyone recall or know about this, let alone how to tell the differences? TIA!

the bastard one is on the cars with traction control (electric throttle body) any other m30b35 e34/32 should ok, eml m30s are few and far between as i have only seen maybe 2 or 3 out of hundreds, automatic cars have a different tps which could be a good possibility for rewiring to use with MS as it has a rheostat for the tranny, you may be able to swap a few wires in the plug and be good to go

Thanks for the info! I got the harness, but may want to go back & get the fuel rail. I believe that must have been where the 2 allen head bolts anchored the injector wiring to. Probably not essential, but would complete the package.

winfred is correct, there is a normal TB car and one that has EML. You want one from a non-EML car. While the EML harness can be made to work, it requires significant changes and isn't worth it given the availability of regular harnesses.

The b35 fuel rail is nicer IMO however if you decide to use it you almost need to use the b35 intake mani also, BECAUSE both the intake and return lines are nearly center mounted and go thru hard lines that interfere with placement of the CSV on the b34 intake mani. SO either remove and cap the CSV and use the b35 rail (also better because it does not have that extra line to said CSV) or use the b35 manifold-if you are not already...

I personally prefer the look of the b35 harness hider bits on top of the fuel rail/injectors, and I even have a hacked off bit that I am going to integrate into a superE harness.

I also agree that the e34 harness looks a lot better. If I had it to do over again, I would still use the e34 harness, I would just make sure it wasn't from an EML car.

I have the b35 harness & intake. I'm not sure I understand what makes the b35 fuel rail nicer. What difference is there between that & the b34?

There is no cold start valve nipple on the b35 rail..

So this one would make for a slightly cleaner install? If so, I'll go back & snatch it.

Well the b35 fuel rail does not have the CSV nipple (bonus, as stated above) BUT you will need to remove the CSV from the manifold for the supply/return lines to work (they will want to occupy the same space)

As far as the fuel rail with the b35 injector connector cover piece, I THINK the fuel rail has the different spots for the injector connector cover to mount (it has small metal brackets and cap head screws) I have not tried to mount the injector connector/cover piece to a b34 fuel rail as yet, so NOT SURE at all if it will work.

The other BIG difference to remember on the b35 look is the lack of the diagonal braces, from the intake to the valve cover. Those look like ass IMO. the B35 uses the beefier under bracket under the intake manifold and appears to suffer no ill effects.

I have gone as far as to grab an e12 valve cover from the yard that does not have those posts (for the braces) OR the B35 AFM mounts, so a super clean valve cover look can be achieved, for MY eventual Alpina style intake.
