Jumped out of the car at lunch to go to the Post Office when a gentleman yelled from his car at me,"Thats my all time favorite car!" from the top of his lungs. Gave me a big smile and thumbs up. Made my day!

Hey, that's AWESOME! I have yet to experience that much bystander enthusiasm in mye28s....several thumbs up...flashing of the lights and waiving though. That's the norm...

On the other hand, my former Guards Red Porsche 928s4 used to attract a a good bit of attention on the road, at gas stations, supermarket, mall, and interstate.

I've had folks follow me into these places with a range of questions including these:
1) "what kinda Porsche is that?...it sounds and looks cool"
2) "what kinda enjun you got in that thang mistur, is it a Corvette enjun?"
3) "my Dad had one of those when I was growing up....what year is yours? Looks great!"
4) "may I see your license and registration please, sir?" ~0

German cars are fun, eh?

Yup! I get alot of #4, myself. :p
Riding in one of my 02's is always fun, too. I find alot of kids point, gawk, and stare at me when driving an 02. One time during the summer a few years back I was coming out of a parking lot in the 71 with my windows down, and a little kid about 6-8 yrs old looked at the car, pointed and said to his unimpressed mother,"I like THAT car!" Cool.

driving by the beach the other guy and some guy no joke lunges through my open window and starts telling me how awesome my car is and asking questions about it... scared the crap outta me at first..

I did not have a hood ornament on the front of my car, and I parked at a 7-11 to stop in.. when I was getting back in my car, some people sitting outside the 7-11 asked me if it was a BMW. At first I was confused, but then I told them that it used to be.

Thats great! Never got that kind of response when i had my 535is... Actually i don't even think anyone has really noticed me in my e21 323... However, when driving the 2002 i always get people saying "I used to own one of those." or "I always wanted one of those"

Most people probably don't notice an E28, but I've had compliments on my IS from guys with discerning tastes, and that's worth more than attention from the masses. I had a guy in a fantastic Mercedes AMG G-Wagon in San Diego tell me that my car was his favorite 5 series. I also had a wealthy friend of my dads compliment my car--he's a local business guy, whose owned everything under the sun, from a Euro 6, a classic Stingray, Lexus for a lotta years (yuck), Porsches, now a Z4--whatever strikes his fancy. He got a kick out of my car. I could tell it was sort of a time warp for him, but walked around it, and said he always thought it was a neat looking car. That made my day.

If my paint were worth anything, I'd freak that a sand-coated stranger just rubbed up against it!

I've converted two co-workers to older bimmers; one to another e28, one went with an e30 (he was more of a kid, Anyway,

). It's amazing, what a good wash/polish/wax and some decent 17"wheels will do for these cars. I think the eurobumpers might've had something to do with it, but I hope it was the balance, torque, and luxurious yet minimalist classicism inherent of the marque at the time that swayed their minds.

Parking in front of one of the better Seattle Nightspots on a late Saturday night, I was a bit startled to exit the driver's side and have someone runnign up to me at full gait. The guy procedes to tell me how great the car looks and how I need to tell one of his friends IT'S AN '89! I said, what, '88 was the last year for these! I guess he had a bet with them that it was an '89.

He said something about having one that was registered as an '89. I wrote it off to him being in front of a busy bar on a saturday night and wanting to win a bet with his buddies. But the remarkable part was, this all happened when the car was missing the front bumper! The front facia was the the euro valance all the time!

I had a cop pull me over once just to ask about my wheels (style 32 at the time) and to compliment the car.

Another guy followed me into a parking lot just to compliment it. He had an older E class, but pointed to my car and said "Now THAT'S the car I wanted, but I ended up with this."

And most of my kids' friends think it's cool

Probably for the same reason my neighbors don't, because it's so loud. :@

I've had a couple compliments on mine, one was right as my wife and I came out of a restaurant, there was an Acura Integra-R parked next to me, the guy asked if (the BMW) was mine, and then told me what a "cool car, and a wonderful specimen".. then invited me to come autocrossing with the local Acura club, after I told him I didn't auto-x with the local BMWCCA because I sorta had a distaste for them.

Any work I don't do myself goes through the local BMW dealer, always get a lot of compliments when I take it in... I guess something about a red E28 parked between a legion of white/blue/black/silver E36/46s stands out. I can't possibly imagine why! =D The tech we took it to, when I did the prepurchase inspection told us he'd buy it if I didn't, I suppose that counts as a compliment

All the guys at my work call it "the old school bimmer".. my one friend I work with JJ notices and asks me every time it's washed/waxed/detailed or anything changes on the car AT ALL. - I'm in the process of trying to convince him and my other work-friend Todd they need to buy bimmers, they both drive firebirds.

Glad you guys have those kind of experiences. I had my roommate the other day walk into the room, look out the front glass door, look at me, and go "which car are you going to drive now that your truck is out of the shop??". Taken by surprise I looked at her and went "prob the Tahoe until I get some work done to the bimmer, why?". She goes "just wondering when the beemer is going back in the garage".....I sat there for a minute trying to figure out why she cared and then the little bitch walked back into the room and goes "no offense but I think your car is ugly and I cant wait until its not infront of the house". Needless to say the e28 didn't move from its spot DIRECTLY infront of the glass window for over a week. I'd tell her what I really thought of her dark puke green 4cyl Chevy S10 but I would prob make her cry.

I think it is somewhat funny but a little bit of a concern that when I have been in the BMW dealership, I get phonecalls at home from all and sundry connected with the dealership who want to buy my car. Of course they don't really want to lay the right price down.
