Brake Issue

I do not drive my M5 very often, but the other day at 40 mph the steering wheel was shaking badly. I noticed front right rim was hot as well as moderate amounts of smoke coming from the caliper area. Is it possible for the caliper to stick intermitently, as well as making the brake pedal feel hard? Additionally, do brake boosters often go bad on these cars and if so, would a failing booster cause the calipers to stick?

Yep... happened to me a few weeks ago. A couple pistons in a caliper were hanging up (causing a bad shake...which would eventually go away, until the next time the brakes were applied). Had both front calipers re-built and changes out the brake booster.

All's well now... awesome brakes!!!

I had the drivers side rebuilt about a year ago . The brakes have bbeen sirt of hard from that time which makes me think that i should have done both sides . Do you think i NEED to replace the booster..? And thanks for the reply ..

Not necessarilly... I did, as the brakes still weren't right after the calipers were re-built. Now they are awesome!

The Caliper guy called me from United in Allston Ma and said that three of the four pistons were frozen and that the one remaining only had about 50% range of motion. He said that if this wasnt such a well built caliper you could have used it as a paper weight .Going to go pick it up on Thursday and i have to now get down the process of bleeding the breaks after i put the new pads in also .The caliper was very easy to remove and i am now going to check some of the other front end parts . I am just hopefull that this is a major difference .
