Largest Tires possible on these rims and brakes too.

I recently acquired a set of Hayashi Racing 16x8 rims. I am having the centers powdercoated (2pc rims) and the double chrome lip polished, but i want to be able to fit the largest tires on them possible. I am currently looking at getting 245/45/16 for the rear and 225/45/16 for the front. I cant show you a picture of the rims and goole has NOTHING on them, but i can show you what tires I have chosen. Please tell me if they are going to fit in a stock 86' 535i wheel well.
These are the rears : 245/45/16 Dunlop SP Sport 9000

These are the fronts : 225/45/16 Yokohama AVS ES100

If you know of any major problems that this may cause, please let me know now before i throw down the money for them. The offset on the rims I believe are either +18 or +13, but i cant really tell you for sure.

Lastly, brakes. I would like to get a set of larger calipers and you mentioned the E34 or something swap for the brakes. What years and what models work for getting in some larger rotors.

EDIT I found the rims that closest resemble they, they are DARN close, but will be lack in the centers. Sorry for the eeky E30

The offset is required to answer this question but in any case 245/45/ is likely the widest tire that will fit in the rear.

Hey TCD. Remember TJ's punk Nissan friend (YellowPreludeR)......heh welcome me to the club. I still own the Nissan, but ill probally dump all my $$ into the 5'er here and just use the Nissan for a track car or something to drstroy on weekends.

Anyway on a side note. How would I go about measuring the offset? There arent any markings to show for them on the wheels. Can I do it with a tape measure or ruler? Got any pics. Thanks.

BTW, the AVS ES100 is a junk tire, both for the money, and absolutely.

The Kumho 712's hold up much better at the track (cheap), and the RE730/750 are MUCH better (but more money).

You think so? I never tried the AVS ES100, but I have tried out the old AVS intermediates and thought they were pretty damn good. On the other hand, I did have a set of Kumho 712s at one point and hated them so much that I almost threw them away. They are the worst UHP tire I have ever tried (from a dry performance standpoint).

There's definitely a difference in the 712 and the 730/750 (i've run both on the same track on the same car. Sheldon (M5) was instructing me and was running ES100's on his car and hated them. As a passenger i didn't really like them either. I ran the 712's at a different event so i cant say it was a back to back comparison, but i dont recall getting upset with the 712s.

I think part of the deal is that people expect the ES100s to be like the intermediates. They're not. People with that expectation will be let down.

Do you really want a mismatched set of tires on your car? Sure it will work, but it just seems odd that you would want to start off with one kind of tires on the front and a different kind on the rear. Size differences are no problem, but I usually save mixed tires front/rear to the times when I need to finish off a pair before putting new rubber on one end or the other.

would this not give a larger back end look to fill up the wheel wells. Lots of people do it with staggered rims and tires to do it too. I dont care about the different tread patterns, I just want that look. When it comes time to replace back tires, I will just get new ones. Easy as that.

but really. If you had these 16x8 rims, what tires would you put on the front and rear? I dont reall have more than $500 for tires. Im pretty sure I can get a good set for there. What are your tire suggestions??

If you're after ultimate dry performance and dont care about ride quality, hydroplaning, or too much about treadwear, the best tire for the money by far is the Falken Azenis. Right around $90 for a 16" tire. My favorite tire combination to date is a Falken Azenis Sport up front, and a wider Falken FK451 GRBeta in back (225f/245r). The azenis is big for its size, so a 205/55/16 will be as wide as most 215 or 225mm tires.

Or, I can recommend the Falken GRBeta all around...they are sticky, good in the wet, and definitely much better than the Kumho 712s in every aspect, except maybe wear. Oh, and the GRBetas are a little narrow for their size (at least compared to the azenis) For both of these tires, see either discounttiredirect.com or vulcantire.com

Another really good, sticky tire for the money is the Kumho Ecsta MX.

I am running the Falken Ziex 512 which is an all season but I have really liked the tire ... good in the rain too ... I am running a 225/50/16 on a 16x8 wheel.

But with the offset you believe those tire to be I would be careful on size ... I think you will rub on the fenders if the fenders are not rolled. My wheels are 23 mm I believe and I have no issues in the back but I do ever so barely rub the front strut tower with the rim protector on the tire.

Tires were cheap too ... I think I got them for just over 80 a piece ..

Looks like we have another Lime Green M3 but this time in an E28!!

Tires are your contact patch to the world when driving. Get good ones. Save a little more money and get a set of FOUR of the same type (sizes can be different front to rear) and you will be happier and your car will not sprout a tri-level sushi table and turn Lime Green with envy of the nice E28s with a matched set of staggered tires on them.

the man who owned the rims before me said he ran a set of 245/45/16 in the rear and and 225/45/16 in the front. I guess ill just keep shopping around till I find a set of tires that has the same tread patern and just diff sizes. You people have any favorite places to get good deals on tires? I know you all know a good place to get ones.

225/50/16 and 245/45/16 would be a better match, since they are the same diameter. The best places to get tires are Tirerack.com and discounttiredirect.com. I always go to a local America's tire co. and have them match dtd or tirerack's prices. Another good place to go is Costco, but they only sell Michelin, BFG, and Bridgestone tires.

But seriously, first figure out the offsets to make sure those sizes will fit on your 5er.

It does sound like the tires and the wheels will rub on all sorts of stuff. The front of the E28 likes the 200-220 size tires best. Any bigger and the technical stuff up front takes a beating. This increases the shimmy opportunities considerably. Looks good, drives bad. So if there are 245-45-16 in the rear stay with the 225-50-26 up front, get a strut brace and hope all the other stuff is in good shape. Will we hear about tramlining next?

you got that right with the bling. Well i cant really measure the offset until the centers come back from the powdercoating shop. Wed is the earliest, but he will call. I will definitly get the offset when I do get them back. Also, keep up the tire suggestions. Looks like 245/45/16 in the rear and 225/50/16 in the front seems to be the best choice.

I really suggest just doing 235s if you plan on upgrading your suspension later -- Unless someone here runs 245s with a lowered ride...

i havent really found anyone that even sells 235 tires. Everyone wants 225 and 245, ill just keep looking. I have plenty of time.

Tirerack.com has a feature that lets you search for matched sets of staggered sizes at the same time. Enter a car that came with staggered tire sizes from the factory, I use a '99 540i, then search "tires". It'll show the factory sizes, but just click "custom front and rear sizes", you can then enter 2 different sizes at once and search.

Well those are my options I guess. I am thinking the Kumho ECSTA Supra 712 are going to be my choice. I dont have $200 to spend on a single tire...yet.....

Ok. I finally found a tag on one of the rims stating that the offset is +22 Now comes the choice of tires.
I think i have decided to go with a 225/50/16 all the way around the car. I think the 245/45 will be too big and have some issues with how low the car is.
The rims are 16x8. THe turbo car is lowered significantly. Probally 2+" Getting your fingers under wheel well and up over the tire is tough.

Do you think that the car will need 225/45 or 225/50 to clear how low it is or is that not really that much of a difference. Also, what brand of tires do you all reccomend.

The pics don't show how low the car really is. My car is lowered and I have no problems with speed bumps or whatnot.
His car scrapes everywhere he goes. We could BARELY fit a floor jack underneath the subframe
