I believe all the e28 m5's, like mine has it. I have heard of some people adding used ones to the other e28's. This is what i found from searching roadfly posts, but nothing on troubleshooting, except cleaning contacts. My passenger side was working, and i just finished replacing the whole vinyl piece, so when i reattachecd everything, nothing is working. My drivers side never worked, but thats because the wire lead was inside the headliner. I found it, but havent gotten to it. I will check it on Friday again, with my test light.

Any info on the best way to wire the M5 lighted rear view mirror
would be appreciated also.

well i have an m5, so my came with the illuminated sun visors. I dont have the lighted rear view mirror. My is pre-wired for the illuminated visors. I hear people using the sun roof motor lead, and splice it there. I am sure if you search roadfly you can find some options. Also search valentine radar detector. The use power from sunroof motor to power it up also.

Be aware that adding the lights to the mirror housing makes the thing vibrate too much to be used for important things like watching for certain Crown Victorias and etc. I've found the inside rear view mirror to be be next to useless unless I hold my hand on it to keep it steady. If I didn't already have it I don't think I'd add it. Apparently they don't have to watch their rear view mirrors very often in the fatherland.

Yeah on my M5 the thing vibrates like crazy if the car is out in the sunlight (and the plastic heats up). Even with the little stalk touching the windshield it vibrates.

On my 535i I added a maplight and it didn't vibrate nearly as bad as the one in the M5. But that is because I added some insulated wire wrapped around the mounting plate to help firm up the mount. This mirror does not have the stalk touching the windshield. Seems the big problem is that the mirror assembly is not well balanced and the pivot cup, as it heats up, gets loose enough to let the mirror vibrate.

On the lighted visors, are the bulbs replaceable? One of mine does not work and it could either be wiring or a bulb. Tried to clean the contacts already.

Lotus & I installed lighted mirror & visors in my 535i. We used a Scotch-lock for the positive at the sunroof motor wiring, and drilled a small hole in the roof/windshield sheetmetal area area to attach the ground.
My mirror vibration is minimal - does well in the E30, too. Yet to install one in the 2002tii!

FWIW,
the factory harness for the visors runs down the A-pillar on the drivers side....

Inside it I should say but you can run it on the outside of it too...

I know this is a really old thread, but relevant to my question.

I have a lead on some M5 Rear Sun Visors with the lighted Vanity Mirrors. I'd appreciate some feedback/answers on the following:

1. Wiring: I'm putting these in a stock 1988 535i. Where is the best and nearest wire tap location. I also will be installing an E30 Map Light Rearview Mirror and will likely tap into the sun roof for this (okay to double tap?)

2. Bulb Replacement: One of the Vanity Mirrors does not light up, likely a blown bulb. How do you or can you replace the bulbs in these? If so, what size/spec are they?

I'd appreciate any help on this as soon as possible as the sale for these ends in the next 24 hours.

don't double tap, tap once and divide the 12+ to the three locations, the two visors and the map lights. They do not use much power and the S/R is fused pretty high. Plenty of power.

A simple search shows the lighted mirrors are available for about 12 bucks and bulbs for about 3 each

Where exactly in the sunroof wiring should you tap into? I've got all this crap, too. Yes, I said crap.

I tapped into a blue and a black wire following a connector and the lights in the mirror only worked while USING the sunroof.

Obviously I did it wrong. I know I should tap into those wires, but just don't know where.

NLA so far as I can tell. It's listed nowhere on RealOEM. You could probably make one if you had one to measure, etc. I'd love to do that. Seriously.

obviously, it pulls some amps...

my drivers side vanity mirror lights up, but the passenger one doesnt. how does one disassemble the damn thing and test the bulbs and power leads? They seem like one piece...do you just pry the mirror/lights out?
