Going to look at a 2002 this week...

Post by Kyle in NO »

An friend of my brother has had a 1976 BMW 2002 for the last 10 years or so. Red exterior (Verona I think) and a tan interior. 14" gold BBS wheels. :D I've always been eyeballing it, but he always used it as a daily driver and didn't have any interest in selling it.

Fast forward to this week, and he calls and asks whether I have any interest in the car. He moved to Houston, TX a couple years ago for school, and the car has been parked under his parents' carport since then. He didn't think it was reliable enough to take out of town and drive around Houston, so there it sat. Its only been sitting for a couple years, so it might not be hard to revive. Worst case the fuel system will need to be cleaned out, plus a new battery. I have revived much worse, so this is not a big deal.

Anyway, the price he's asking for it makes it almost too good to pass up. I'm thinking I can drain the tank and put some fresh fuel in there, along with a battery, and basically drive the thing home. I don't think the fuel in the carb or lines has varnished up yet. I just hope there isn't too much rust! If there is any real rot on the thing, I'm gonna pass and see if anyone here has any interest.

Opinions or tips on procuring a last year model 2002? I know about the rust, and the driveline seems relatively bulletproof. Its a damn M10 after all....Parts seem to be pretty cheap too.

Talk to John in VA. He's a 2002 guy and he has a gorgeous tii right now that he did a great deal of work on. I really love that car, and I've never been bitten by the 2002 bug. Tim Jones (B9) is also a great resource, and there are others I am forgetting I am sure. HTH.

I had a '76 before getting the current '74 tii. BMW had most of the bugs out by the final year, and they came with the 3.90 rear. As long as the rust is not bad it should serve you well.

list your paypal or something and BUY IT. It needs a home and you need to revive something besides those food fetishes and whatnot.

You've got a couple hundred coming from me.

You don't have much to worry about on a regular 02, just how fast you want to make it. You know all the rust spots, yah and check the shock towers and take out the back seat and take a look-see there too.

I loved my tii dude. Don't know if I could go back to a regular 2002 unless it was modded a bit because when the kugelfisher was set up just right man the powerband felt SO FOKKEN RIGHT.

Well, went to look at the 2002 today. Not bad really. It has a really nice paint job, probably in the wrong shade of red though. The interior isn't too bad, just dirty as hell. Needs seat covers too, but they are still cushy. Body-wise, the shock towers are solid and the floors look to be good. There is some rust bubbling on the doors, and a couple small spots on the rear window channel. Looks to be easily fixable stuff. There is also some rust on the right rear inner wheel well, but it doesn't look too bad. I can have a repair panel welded in to fix that. I'm sure I missed something, but for the price I can't really lose! I think it will crank right up with a fresh battery. The engine has a Weber carb conversion and has been rebuilt in the past. Also has an electronic distributor conversion and 4-speed manual trans. Me likey!

Been sitting for 2 years and no oil puddles! Yay. I know the pics are terrible, but I'm no professional like Matt H...

Man not bad at all......

You can do so much with those cars for so little money. Lots of interior mods can be had on the cheap and your foundation is all there with the weber and the pertronix. My tii had points and I got to know exactly how to keep them just right, but all of that is really a PITA.

Enjoy. Email you tomorrow with an addy for the seats. It just occured to me that's going to be a pretty large delivery, I gotta figure out where the f*ck to receive them, I think a Kinko's FEDEX center will be okay.

Go for it. My dad has been reading my Roundels lately and been talking a lot about his college roommates '02. He saw Roy's car and started talking about how much he'd like to have one for himself...

I'm working on it now!

Looks like a decent car. Seems to me it would look like a different car all cleaned up.

Is that mildew on the steering wheel? Reminds me of a Blazer I used to have.

Looks more like mold, but I'm no fungus expert.

Kyle,
Looks like a nice car if the price is right. ;) What is with the patchy growth on that otherwise nice-looking Momo Prototipo steering wheel...mildew? :dunno: Should clean right up, eh?

Lets just say its cheap enough to interest me, who hates over-paying for anything. I think the mildew will wipe right off, it did on my last leather wheel that had the same problem.... :D

PS Get used to floppy shifters

Post by KingCast »

The shift lever in an 02 is a hoot.

I had my assembly reasonably tight but it is still a floppy sorta' thing and the suspension mount is really kinda frail look at it from under the car.

Anyway, at a stoplight it will kind of wag about, like the tail of a doggie, which is why I called my car "The Puppy" given its happy little energy and love of the redline and the way it scampered about town.

Soo, now that you're gonna be picking up an '02, would you be willing to trade your e24 for a few cases of alcohol and a date with one of my hot friends with loose morals?

Kyle, that rust is structural!

Do not simply patch it over. Plan on a much larger panel repair/replacement. There are still patch panels available (search for an outfit called "Veng" or hack that part out of a good parts car) that cover from above that down into the trunk floor and that is ideally what you want to use there.
