This is my brothers E28 M5 turbo. Engine is a 745i shortblock with JE forged pistons, balancend and lighter crankshaft, rods and flywheel. Displacement is now 3.7l. On top of that is a 3.6 M5 head that is bin ported and polished. Between those parts is a headgasket from our friends of TCD. Turbo is a upgraded 745i turbo, again from TCD. Behind all this is a 6 speed M5 gearbox mounted with a bigger clutch. A 745i LSD is going to try to keep the wheels from spinning. Brakes up front are 330mm discs and 4 piston calipers from a B10 Biturbo. In the rear are a set of vented 300mm E34 M5 discs and calipers at work. Suspension is not finished yet.

Its the upgraded 745i turbo from TCD.
I understand that, but the turbo sold with the normal TCD M30 kits is the T4, which is larger. And that is on the lowly M30, which doesn't have near the airflow potential of the S38...

He's not using an S38. It is only the head. I know what you mean though...the limiting factor of the M106/M30 is certainly the head and the S38 head surely helps that flow problem therefore using a 745i turbo seems kind of like a downgrade rather than an upgrade.
Considering the budget of a project like this, I would recommend a turbo along the lines of a GT35R or GT40. You're not going to get far with that K27, even upgraded.
Awesome buildup. Very nice work. That K27 like others have mentioned is seriously going to be a limiting factor (at least it has been upgraded). I'm with landspeed in that you really need a serious turbo to finish it off. A GT40 would be tits.

What makes a S38 different from the M30 is the head. The short block for the M30/M106/M88 and S38 are virtually identical. The M106 will have oil jets and the others will not.
He is going to find that with that turbo he will have bad turbo boost bleed-off. The turbo will not be able to maintain anything over 5 psi at upper RPM. TCD should have known better than sell him a K27 for a 3.7L S38.

The engine is going to run with a DTA motormanagment system and that will be set on the Dyno. My brothers goal is 600-650hp but if the turbo is not good for this aplication he's going for a diffrent turbo.

600-650 is asking way too much from a k27. I'd be pissed when I found out I have to change the flange on an absolutely beautiful manifold.

Not quite identical. The difference is easy to see by looking at the oil return line coming off the bottom of the head.
On the S38 block there is a mounting boss just below the right rear side of the head. A short oil return line runs from the underside of the head to the block.
So as you can see it's possible to install the S38 head on the M30 block.

The turbine and exh housing will likely support the 600hp but the 60 trim comp wheel is a little too small. It'll be happy at 8/9psi and 450-500HP but beyond that a GT3582R wheel would be a better choice.
Interesting thread. Was curious as to whether the s38 head would fit. Unfortunately the pictures are down.
I wonder if the rotating assembly needs to be changed to make it work? i assume it would not but have not checked the stack height between an m30 and an s38 engine.
Also can the single chain be used or must you upgrade to a double chain?
