Hood Insulation

Since I've owned my M5 I always noted that the PO had removed the underhood insulation for whatever reason. Now I'm growing concerned that here in the Hawaii sun/heat with how hot the S38 runs that my hood paint will cook off (already starting to see evidence to this end). Going to Maximilian and other OE suppliers it looks like the underhood insulation is NLA. Anybody have good substitutes? I imagine folks running turbo engines (Dinan and Alpina B7) probably have good products at hand, but a search of the site here didn't turn up any compelling answers...thoughts on good replacements for the factory underhood insulation?

Are there wrecking yards in paradise? I imagine the 528e piece (which is the same functionally and more plentiful should work. I almost think they're the same piece.

Indeed there are a couple on Oahu, but realtively slim on the Bimmer parts inventory. There are only 3 E28 M5's on the island, and very few E28's in general out here. Non-garage kept vehicles don't survive for long. The other M5's are super-pristine low-mileage variants (<40K miles) relative to mine. Will probably have to source the insulation from the mainland...

That will not be a fun item to ship. They made a ton of 528s, so you might get lucky.

I'll definitely keep an eye out for used stuff to turn up on-island. Any ideas for substitute / better than OE replacement heat absorbent or reflective products?

Pretty sure this is a piece that is specific to the e28 M5. It has a one piece foam/cardboardish cover that spans the whole hood, where as the other e28's have three separate pieces of foam that cover the indentations. Best bet I think would be to watch for someone parting a wrecked M5 (one seller on ebay right now). Good luck. Dave

Several 6er enthusiests at Sharkfest had new stuff on their hoods that claimed from there. I could use an update myself.

The 528e has the same style piece. Unfortunately, I haven't inspected every nook and cranny of the respective pieces, but just looking at some indentations that line up with, well, nothing made me think that they might be interchangeable.

Hold the rotten tomatoes.....if you ever find one, wash it well with Simple Green and paint it with flat black high temp engine paint. Mine looks brand new and has not caught fire or faded! (3 months now since painting)

Can you post pics of the painted one piece hood cover? I cleaned mine with Simple Green last year but the result is not 100%.

Your approach sounds like the perfect solution to bringing the cover back to life.

Try Maximilian again, but go Euro. I checked for mine (with my VIN), and it shows up as available, at $44 for the centre and $18 each side. I haven't called to confirm it's actually available, but I did notice that it's not listed under the US model. I'll probably be calling them next week to see if they have it, as I need to replace mine as well.

He needs the single piece insulation, not the 3-piece foam.

Hey Mark, I was afraid someone would ask since I don't have any recent pics of the insulation. I will get some today. It looks brandnew! And no fires yet!
