If anyone can help a fellow board member on a question of fitment for this differential, I would appreciate it.

Are these big case diffs a direct fit into a 5er with the short mount cover? If not, what cover is needed for correct fit?

you need the m5 cover or big 5 series cover. the e23 covers do not fit. Todd got one to fit by grinding out the tab but i tried the same and I couldn't get it to fit without grinding right through the cover.
