Self Leveling shock replacement

Post by underwatervans »

How do you go about deleting this self leveling b.s. and putting in stock or bilistines?

you take out all the hardware and shocks/springs and replace them with the normal stuff.....
if you are asking for a play by play its pretty simple, the shock is just held in by 3 nuts and 1 bolt.

I'm not sure how the e28 self leveling is set up, but on the e32 you have to put a loop into the system to keep the fluid circulating through the power steering.
After that you just use normal shocks and springs.

The E28's self leveling system is a stand alone system - it is not part of the hydroboost steering or brakes.

If you are interested in selling the removed bits and pieces let me know.

Stand-alone without any hydraulic assist? How does it work then? I am very familiar with the E34 M5 SLS, having replaced that with a standard Bilstein setup and looped back the lines but do not own a E28 M5...yet (very soon hopefully). I assumed they were similar systems.

It's not "without any hydraulic assist." The E28 SLS has the pump/reservoir under the spare tire, and is not connected to any other system in the car (except electric power). Thus, it's a "stand-alone" system.

I apologize, I misinterpreted his comments. The E34 system seemed to be prone to leaks once you put enough time or mileage on it. I would be interested in the pros and cons of retaining the E28 system from those who had gone either way. I for one felt alot better once I removed all that dead weight (accumulators, control valve, plumbing) from the E34 and had a system I knew would never leak and was not insanely expensive to replace.

I will search the forum for past posts but am on a roll now and can't help but ask the question here.

I have a question, if you remove the struts and leave the rest, is there a problem without plugging the lines, is it to keep rust out of the system, is that much of an issue?

The sls system is desired by some and leaving the parts on the car will lead to their deterioration over time. The added weight is another consideration. I think the bav auto elimination kit for the e34 shows some bolts that may be used to plug the lines, but I really don't know what they are for.

If I had the system and was changing the suspension, I would remove all the parts and either store them for later reinstallation or sell them.
