FYI- Found this listing on Auto Trader. It's in Albuquerque NM.
Says it has black interior. Don't know if it's legit or a swapout.
It's an 11/87 prod date and is close to my number.
Quite a few black interiors were done at the end of the run.
My last 7 are 2875318.

I am 90 percent sure that car is the car I think it is, which would make it a true black/black car. The way I know of this car is by an old BMW buddy (pre-roachfly days when it was bimmer.org), and he knew one of the previous owners of this car (if it is the car).
Based on what I know the car was sold 4 years ago with ~124k on the clock, and the dash was cracked and had a cover (not the hardcover cover).
From what I know of the car it was well maintained. Hope this helps.

I troll AutoTrader for interesting cars fairly regularly. As I recall, this car has been on the 'Trader for almost a year
Seems like it would have sold by now, if it was a decent and pretty straight car. It would be interesting to know the history and if anybody on the board is familiar with this one.

I dunno what it is about Autotrader, but I got more calls from craigslist when I listed my E39 than I ever did on autotrader. He may not be trying to market it aggressively.gray635 wrote:Gary and Brett:

It may well be a great car, but given the low price I am surprised it has not sold.
OK, I received a response from my buddy that lives in New Mexico. He is of the opinion that it is the car his friend owned four years ago. Based on seeing the red pin stripe he thought it was the car, but he was not 100 percent. He went on to say it was a nice well-maintained car with a tight suspension and strong motor.

I only know of 4 black interior cars. This would be the fifth.
In short it was explained to me that many people say they covet the black on black M5s, but when the owner wants to move the car people aren't as quick to buy the car. Either they question the authenticity or don't really want a black interior. From what I know it took one of the previous owners a long time to move the car, and he took a tremendous loss just to sell it.
I agree that someone should check out this car in person. If I was looking for an e28 M5 that would be on the top of my list.

I can prove that mine is authentic but like you said many don't care.
The buyers that are informed know this is quite rare.
I'd raise the price of this car and the first thing I would say is about the black interior and show the documentation to prove it. I have a build sheet for my car and it states it came with black interior.
Things like a cracked dash and timing chain guides are the biggest drawbacks for M5 buyers. This could be holding this car back.

I tried to buy this M5 18 months ago when I first moved to Albuquerque. I couldn't get a response from the owner via e-mail and just assumed that the car had sold and that they didn't know how to remove the ad. If it is in fact for sale still, and she'll respond to an e-mail, I may have to check it out.

No one seems to know exactly how this took place.

Another Black/ Black E28 M5 (see link below) has appeared for sale. I have been away from the community and email for sometime but can someone contact the owner and post the VIN for this M5? I suspect this car was not originally delievered with a Black interior but I would like to see the VIN to confirm.

Finally got a reply from the owner in ABQ. The car is still available. I'm trying to get some more details. Got some more pics and it looks pretty clean, leather is starting to wear a bit, but not too bad. Any thoughts/suggestions on what I should be looking for when I check it out? (I have an 88 535is, so I have some ideas, but how about specific to an M) Thanks for your help

If they fail the engine could be toast.
Dashboard- and typical E-28 stuff.
A leakdown test will tell it all. Probably not been done but should be before you buy a S38 powered car.
An engine rebuild is big bucks. 5-10k.
Otherwise there are pretty bullet proof.
If you're interested post for someone in the area to go take a look see and drive. Post on general forum so everyone can see it.

test drove today
Drove the M5 today. Pretty nice, but hasn't been registered or insured since the fall of '06. All service/maintenance assessments are based on a "check-up" in August of 2006. The car has been started regularly and drove fine, but what types of things could go wrong from sitting. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Cars that sit can develop flat spots in the tires.
Rubber things like hoses and belts can get stiff and brittle.
I would change all the fluids first thing.
Check the battery box and make sure it hasn't become a big mess from corrosion.
I would probably change the plugs soon.
Check for any mold in the interior.
After that all you can do is test everything and see where you're at.
Keep us up to date.

Not moving forward with purchase
Just letting folks know I'm not moving forward with the purchase. They were pretty open about coming down to 9.5k (needs a new radiator/hoses and new tires) but timing chain hasn't been done, and there are few other small items that I'm guessing would add up to close to 3-4k in investment. I'm not a big do it yourselfer, so I'd be paying a mechanic to do the work. Figured I'd insult them by offering 7k. It may make more sense for someone more mechanically inclined. If anyone's interested and I can be of any help on the local front don't hesitate to ask.
