long cranking, rough running...

Post by bmw4aaron »

I just replaced the headgasket on the TD. Now it spins for a while then fires up, then idles good for about 5-8secs and then runs rough. I've bled air at the injectors and at the IP. Seems to have gotten a little better. doesn't stall out now.

Does this symptom sound more like air in the system or injection timing off? And if there is air, can it work out by letting it run? Thanks.

I'd re-check the timing, it could have moved. If it were air, it should have only gotten into the system between the IP and the injectors. That should purge from the system rather quickly. If it doesn't clear up after several minutes of running, its likely the timing.

This same thing happened to me after I thought I fixed some problems with mine. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I rechecked the timing today, and found I was off a tooth. I don't do these things enough to remember how its supposed to look in relation to the alignment pin on the IP. For some reason I thought that after to take the pin out and torque the belt, its supposed to be a tooth off. Anyway I set it again, and she purrs like a kitten.

Nice. When it was rough, was it only rough when cold and then smoothed out when warm?

Never really smoothed out, but when it was warm it didn't stall. believe it or not it still made good power like this, but you could feel it wasn't right.
