Seller is honest about it having a salvage title. He's basically right about it having no effect on anything but value. If nothing else that fact could be used to get him to knock an additional couple hundred off the asking price.n2motorsports wrote:too bad it has a salvage title.
If he is driving the car, as it appears from the pics that he might be, then he probably has the equivalent of a "revived salvage" title, which merely denotes that the car was once considered a total loss. A vehicle at that age can be considered totaled with only superficial damage. A Carfax could easily confirm that. In any event, a salvage title should not discourage someone in a case like this.
i think if you run the title though AL (or maybe some other states) it can become non-salvage......I've heard about this but never cared further to investigate. My folks have a perfectly good car (Pontiac sedan) that has a salvage title because it had a wreck that monetarily was the value of the car car repair....but since it had ridiculously low miles, they fixed it. The down side is insurance. They went through hell getting comprehensive insurance on the car. I have a classic/collector policy for my FIATs & the only option there is full coverage.....I don't think they'd go for a salvage title either. With the age E28s are getting on them & their potential collectible value, that could be an issue in the future also. That said, I usually run liability only on all my cars (regardless of age...anything) & so there's no practical downside. I *would* pay less than for an otherwise equivalent car, however.

Yes it is too bad about the salvage but if someone is interested in just driving it and not so much keeping for collector value then it will suit well. I don't drive it that often as I have another car. I try to keep the miles off and only drive on the weekends. I originally bought to do some restoring but now I just dont have the money or space. I am in my mid 20's and trying to go back to school so I know I will own another some day, but Im sure they will cost way more by then. I have looked at enough e28s to know that this is a good buy. The interior is a 7 and it's got BBS's. It bums me out that if it wasnt salvaged then I could get another grand I bet. Am I asking too much? I did put OBO but how much lower can I go? I could sell the recaros and BBSs for parts and practically make 3/4 of price. Gimme some advice...

I had an oppurtunity to check this car out last night. I had never met the seller before (Lee) and the impression that I get from him is straight forward and honest. I don't see any wool being pulled here, he is a good guy. He is telling it like it is. He really seemed to be unhappy about not being able to take care of the car himself.
The car is in solid shape but it is original stock and needs to be completely gone through. All the normal wear and tear items need attention. It needs all the suspension rubber and bushings, also subframe and possibly dif mount. The car was in a front end collision at some point, hence the salvage title. The front frame rails are a little crumpled. You cannot tell by looking at it though and she drives true and straight so the repair was done well. I saw no rust of any significance. The only bad paint is on the roof. The engine is strong, and the only oil leak I could see was from the front cam seal, very typical for these cars and easy and cheap to fix. The engine was cold to the touch before we started it. It fired right up and idled smooth (you know, e28 smooth). Owner stated that it had a valve adjustment recently and the valve tick is barely noticable. Owner also states it has synthetic oil, changed when he purchased the car. It looked fresh. The transmission feels strong and shifts smooth, it needs shifter bushings (what 5 speed e28 doesn't
). The brakes worked great and pads had lots of life left. The interior is in pretty decent shape, the dash only had two cracks that where not very big. Typical cracking in the sport seat leather with only a couple small tears (no more than an inch), both repairable. Rear seat looked good, a little sun burn at the top but no thread separation and with some Leatherique oil application should come back to being supple. The windshield is not original and wasn't put in well so there is a gap at the top of the right side. The rear passenger side door does not shut right, but you can see that the strike plate is out of position so that is fixable. There is some body repair at the same rear door but it was minor. It needs fog lights, and the airdam looked good except for a small crack at the bottom (like it got caught on something while backing up).
All and all the car is a good runner that just needs time and TLC. If you have the time and money to put into this car I believe it will go another 200K no problem. If you want to ask me any questions about something I might not have covered here, PM me with a phone # and I will talk to you about it. But like I said Lee is telling it like it is, no mysteries here. Good car, just needs somone with the time and money to love it.
