Yet another rebuilding the IP post

Post by jowjup »

In addition to the non-functioning temp and tach, my IP leaks. Although the car starts right up and runs reasonably well, it has poor power and black smoke, especially climbing hills and hard acceleration.

I have a Bosch kit (DGK121) and replacement supply (vane) pump and bushings to install. I think I'll order a timing belt and water pump and change those out as long as I'm in there. Is there anything else I should replace?

Have read all the posts I can find, downloaded a pictorial for reassembly (looks pretty straightforward) and I think I understand the whole process. If there's anything I'm concerned about, it's the setup and timing. It's my first diesel and there seems to be a number of places one can screw up relative to getting the IP adjusted properly for maximum performance (ie no smoke and good acceleration) and getting the timing right on (the marks and pins and IP cam setting). Anybody have any last minute advice?
