well I got my M5 today and I'm super excited. Its in really nice shape, 98k on it. I have a new oem shift knob and boot all ready to install, but can't get the old one off. I remember it being hard to get off on my 533i, but not this hard. Any tips? Thanks.

I ran into this problem on my deceased 533i when I was trying to remove the shift knob. No amount of pulling and yanking would get it off. 
So I ended up cutting it apart and found the reason it wouldn't release. Someone had epoxied the damn thing onto the shifter. 
As DRP535 suggested, open the sunroof, and place towels on the seats. Stand on your seats are start pulling. If it doesn't come off start dissecting the knob. Or you could use this as an excuse to buy a new Short Shifter !!!

I have to remember about mine. I've fitted the illuminated knob from the E30 M3 Sport Evolution and it has fragile little wires running down the stick taped to it for security. When I need to remove it I hope I remember not to just grab it and yank otherwise I'm gonna end up with a very expensive unilluminated illuminated gearshift knob very quickly!
