Garrett/AiResearch turbocharger?

I was 'yardin earlier today when i came upon a 524td, mit AiResearch turbocharger, but it is my understanding that BMW used the KKK K26.

Were Garrett/AiResearch turbos offered as a replacement for the 524td, or did some actually come from the factory with them?

I did grab the turbo & manifold by the way, and it seems to be in good shape, with no radial play, and very minor axial play.

My old 524td had the AiResearch unit on it, as did several other ones I have seen. I'm pretty sure it came as original on some of them, if not all...
