1987 BMW 535is – Royal Blue over Parchment
Often referred to as the “Poor Man’s M5”5-speed manual transmission
Rust-free California car
Color code 198 Royal Blau Metallic over Parchment 206 interiorHighlights / Upgrades:
• Converted Euro bumpers
• Euro headlights
• Hartge front spoiler
• Early E34 M5 / M-Technic steering wheel
• BMW rear view mirror with integrated E30 map lights added
• Original crack-free dashboard when purchased; professionally repaired later and currently covered with a dash mat
• Factory sport seats in good condition
• Power seats with functioning headrest adjustment
• BMW Bavaria rear headrests color matched in Parchment
• Rear sunshade adapted from a B5 VW Passat
• Twill floor mats
• Plenty of maintenance and repair receipts included
• Odometer gears replaced when I purchased the car, and odometer has functioned properly since then
• Both fuel pumps replaced recently
• New tires installed last year
• OEM accessories sourced throughout the years including coin tray and factory torch lampKnown Issues / Cosmetic Needs:
• Paint still presents well overall and looks really nice from 100 feet away, but there is some peeling beginning on the hood
• Small parasitic battery drain that I have never fully diagnosed
• Oil pressure sending unit/light needs to be replaced
• Passenger side CV boot ripped recently and passenger side shock is now leaking and needs to be replaced
• Car is nearly 40 years old, so it is not perfect and should be expected to need continued sorting as with most classic BMWsSmog / Registration:
The vehicle is currently on PNO (Planned Non-Operation). The last time the car was driven regularly it was running rich and did not pass California smog. Because of this, I would prefer an out-of-state buyer or someone familiar with California emissions requirements who is willing to handle the smog process themselves. A release can be signed stating the buyer will be responsible for smog.Located in San Diego, CA.I would really like this car to go to an enthusiast who will appreciate and preserve it rather than flip it. This is not a perfect car and needs work.I have additional photos and videos available and can text them upon request.

Update: getting some things fixed, still not dealing with CA smog.  I'd rather have a tooth pulled. More updates to come.

Great to meet up today. Excited to bring this car back into operational glory.  So stoked to get back into the E28 after a 20 year hiatus.

I knew I had seen this whip before but I couldn't place it. A little diggin' in the files revealed an encounter with the Mighty Datsun back in 2013.

Glad to hear it is staying in the 'hood and look forward to seeing it around town.
The first opportunity is in 2 weeks at La Jolla Independent for the SoCal Vintage gig.
And you can ink March 20th now for the 2027 St. Paddy's Day Gathering.

I’ve got about 2K in parts on order and I’m not sure I’ll get them all installed and passing smog by then.

However  If I can show up in the 944 Turbo S Silver rose. We might make it.

im pretty sure La Jolla independent did some work on either my first 86 944 turbo and/or my 1988 535i euro conversion.  It’s been a minute. Since the late 90s and early 2000s.

ive missed my old e28 and now my son is taking this new to him e28.
