m5 red label steering box (revisited)

Post by bigwave »

Looking for some clarity here as I have read through a number of threads describing how to identify the m5 steering box that specify it being 3 turns lock to lock and only identifiable by the red tag with part number 2225 120.0.   I recently swapped mine out for a lower mileage box cleaned up and resealed by Jay Stratton and when I went to sell this one to another board member, they asked me to perform the test in this video. Spoiler alert, the input shaft rotates 3.5 times.

Youtube link for steering box test  (the embed youtube tool doesn't like the link)

So the question is, should the box input shaft only turn 3 turns or is there some other limiting factor in the car that only allows this to turn 3 times lock to lock?  The new one that had identical part numbers and looked identical only turns 3 full turns lock to lock when in the car.  While I didn't test the old one prior to removing it from the car, I'm pretty sure they are the same.

I can't give a definitive answer, but logic and my automotive knowledge makes me think you have the same boxes. It goes further out of the car as that is the maximum physical range. The maximum range installed is less as you are hitting turn "stops". They wouldn't engineer the system to ride the limits within the box itself as that would cause undo wear.

That's my reasonable and logical theory... Not fact.
