1985 E28 528i

Post by NickT »

Hi All,

I have just bought a 1985 E28 528i Manual.

It is a well used example but a good base as has a e34 3.5 M30 already installed mated to the standard gearbox with single mass flywheel etc. It has a LSD and blimey it does go well.
Picture below of the day I collected it.

It needs a lot sorting but am excited to get to work on it. A rear shock is blown, rear brakes are low, rear anti roll bar has broken its bracket. I have a shake on the front end at about 100kph and the tyres ruined.
First thing I did when I got it home was to fix a rear window that would not go all the way up and to get into the boot as seemed locked shut and would not open.
Then I went and bought some new wheels and tyres. Fitted them this week and very pleased with the results.

This weekend I am collecting a boot carpet set, new blisten shocks, new tail lights, window winder handles, period bbs front spoiler, the c-pillar trims that are missing on my car and a mtech steering wheel.
Then I can start to do some serious sorting of this car. I just want it to be an awesome daily drive.

The car photographs well but does have a few issues. First thing I did was get rid of the Styles 4's and replaced them with a set of 17" cross spokes.

Then I added the BBS front spoiler

ImageIMG_20151129_174620 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

then started on the normal stuff. ordered new gear lever bushes from BMW. They are waiting to be fitted.

Got new carpets for the boot, also replaced the electric aerial, rear brakes and fitted the C-pillar trims with new plugs from BMW.

The car is now fitted with ebitah springs all around and blistein shocks, braided brake lines too.

I have a box full of all new front steering and suspension parts which are waiting to go on together with a centre bearing.

I have started to polish the lip on the wheels and blimey what a lot of work it is.

ImageIMG_20151228_125249 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

Also started polishing all the chrome back on the car
ImageIMG_20151209_120032 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

Then bought some different wheels. not sure what ones I will keep yet.

More to come. It needs some welding and bodywork so that will be done once all running gear is fixed.

Cheers Mate, first e28 so very excited, but definitely not my first BMW. The list is very long including E12 528i, E21 323i, E30 335i, E30 323i, E36 318i, a few E34s etc.

There have been quite a few e28 owners popping up lately down here. Its nice to see they've gained a bit more of a following. Enjoy it, and if you need a hand with parts, let me know.

Thank you for the comment and you might be able to help with a couple of things.

Exhaust hanging hardware. Mine has a single pipe system and I am changing it back to a double pipe system. I have the exhaust but need everything else.

This weekend fitted an uncracked dashboard into the car and also a new centre drag link, fixed the power steering leak and today my non aircon centre console has arrived. That will be fitted this evening.

this is the car in its current state, i love it.

How did you find an un-cracked RHD dashboard? Jealous. Very.

*edit* Car looks awesome BTW, whatever happened to that E12? looked like a minter.

dashboard was just an ebay search. I was the only bidder and it came from Tassie. was very lucky. There is/was a black one in perth for $330 on ebay.

finding a RHD non aircon centre console was a harder find. Dont think they even sold E28's in Aus without it. So had to buy it from the UK and post it over.

Forgot to write earlier also put in a newer carpet as mine had wear patches. Looks so much better now. Thanks for your kind words, I am well chuffed with her.

The E12 was sold and is in QLD. It was very pretty and only sold it due to moving down to VIC. When I got it, it was horrible but after alot of work and full new interior etc it was a beauty. One of my regrets is selling that car.

so bought another e28. this time a 520 auto for daily duties.

It needed a massive cut and polish but ended up pretty nice.

ImageIMG_20160704_080005 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

fitted some e34 front seats as the originals were ruined
ImageIMG_20160704_080020 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

also cleaned some chrome

ImageIMG_20160626_174551 by nicktinworth, on Flickr

then did new front brakes, new centre bearing, fixed exhaust, fitted stereo as travelling to work is very boring without music, fitted new aerial, engine and autobox service, fitted new speedo gears and now need to work out why rev counter is not working (was not working previously either), new badges, a few trim pieces replaced and new door seals. Had to knock out a dent in the rear corner and also rub down the rear end as the paint was rubbish and is currently in primer. Now just waiting for chrome rain gutter trim to arrive.

In the next week or two it will be doing daily duties.
