Front Air Dam M5/IS installation (how to)

Hi everyone !!!

I recently bought a used M5/IS front air dam (spoiler) for my e28. With it came along a metal bracket. Now I thought that this metal bracket is what they call the "valance" which is where the air dam attaches to until I came across a forum "for sale" topic where a valance showed a different picture.

Can anyone run me through how to install the air dam if I convert my standard 528e front bumper/fog light set up to an M5/IS air dam look. Does it mean that without the valance I am doomed ? Also, what is the role of this metal bracket that went with air dam ?

Please help, anyone ??!!

You use the existing valance and drill holes, or source an IS valance. I have one for sale that is primed and ready for paint.

Remove fog lights, drill holes, and mount the bracket to the existing valance is the basic idea.

Thanks V1cut, now it's fully clear to me how the air dam fits into my car. I need to purchase the left and right fog lamp assembly. Know where I can get them (second hand will do if you know anyone). Am here in LA area.

How do you remove the valance?

I have one that is already pre-drilled for the is air dam

pertinent section says:

To remove the valance, your will need to remove the grills and headlights. After removing the grills and head lights, there are 4? or 6? screws, I forget, on the front center support, two more on each side on the exterior of the car, and one more on each side under the car. Remove all those bolts and screws, then wiggle the valance free.

I found that a lot more than simply wiggling the valance free was needed. The screws hold the valance in place, though the back edges near the wheelwells are also affixed with very strong body adhesive. There was no way in hell my US valance was going to simply "wiggle free." I ended up using a hand steam iron to heat the area around the adhesive, then wiggled, and then the valance released.

Installation is reverse of removal.

i think i am going to keep the valance on the car and just use self tapping screws to hold the frame in and then attach the air dam to the frame.'

I wouldn't use self-tapping screws for the bracket. Once you get the spoiler "hooked" once on one of those parking stops you'll understand. I almost cried the first time it happened to me after I got the car back from the paint shop. It held on pretty tight but it got scratched! I fear that if you just use self-tapping they are going to be pulled out and you'll be left with an hanging/dangling mess. Just get the M10 bolts with washers and nylock nuts and be done with it.

installed the is air dam today

thanks to levent @ guten parts for hooking me up with a killer deal on the frame and is air dam!

installed the frame first and then slid the air dam on. quite the silly install but its on there.

the bumper had a crack and when i stretched it to fit - it flexed a bit - hence the middle has some flex in it

Anyone have the hole measurements for the airdam?
