528e is Offically F'd

Post by eTwentyEight »

Well this weekend did not go as planned. After much time and money spent, I finally was able to drop a freshly machined head into my eta. Yesterday, I finally started the car for the first time in 5 years. By mistake, I forgot to tension the belt properly by leaving the tensioner spring compressed. As I went to start the car up the engine made a CLUNK noise. At that point, I knew what was the only thing that could stop the engine from turning over. My friend and I removed the head today to find the intake valve of cylinder three had broken off and destroyed the piston. Now my low mileage car is basically worthless. I have two cylinder heads with bent/broken valves, a worthless engine, and a car without any clear coat left. At this point I have three options: 1. Sell the car as is 2. Part the car out 3. Engine swap
My question now is, what should I do?

Sorry to hear. We've all gone through the growing pains of trying to fix our cars. I'd say replace the engine and drive it.

If the rest of the car is decent and rust free, just swap in a running engine. I have one sitting in my garage in Charlotte, that I would sell cheaply.

You can pick up an m20B27 for pretty cheap. Replacing an engine with the same thing is a lot easier than swapping something different. Sure it's a full weekend's worth of work, but the cash outlay shouldn't be that bad.

There might be a Fjord V8 with e28 mounts available for sale. Check with StolenFox.

;)

Sorry for your loss though. That's a lot of work to go through to have it end up like that. Just look at it as an opportunity to put more HP under the hood, whether it's an M30 (the M30B35 swap is well documented) or something bigger.

I just might have to send a PM to StolenFox.

Going from from an measly eta to a V8 is like going from a saturn 5 rocket to warp drive in one shot. I recommend baby steps. :)
