Just two here, the white one I had for 11 years and put 155K on and which I greatly regret selling :bawl:

And a 535i parts car. Sad thing was I bought it as a parts car, straight body, terrible paint, ran good after a new ECU, but things changed and I didn't have time to take or use most of what I bought it for. I gave it to Jay3 and DaveC (before his difficulties) so it went to a good cause and most things eventually got used. Oh, not quite free, I asked for and received a case of beer. Here they are towing it away.

Five, in this order:
'83 H5s (still have)
'88 M5 (still have)
'85 H5s (sold to buy a wedding ring)
'84 528e (still have - for sale!)
'85 528i (still have).

I think I will always have at least 2, probably 3. Three is a good number. I like that number, and Trey means three (I'm a third)...not really the reason...sooooo...yeah...sure.

I like this thread...

Let's see....
'87 535is - still have
'87 528e - totalled parts car (gone)
'86 535iA - Winter beater (traded for my 325ix)
'85 524td - shell for RHD project still have
'85 528i - Second and hopefully LAST owner

So I have three at the moment. Thinking about a fourth...
I have a lot of sentimental value locked up in the '87 535is, but it will never be nice, so I'll probably get rid of it. Especially if I get this e28 I'm thinking about getting.

ive owned 2 a 1988 528e and a 1987 528e. the first one was my first car it was given to me and i learned alot with it. the second one replaced the first one after it was rear ended and im currently looking into getting a 3rd one to replace the current one because the rust is taking over.

This thread needs more pics  Slow to load with my 1200 baud modem. I need to get one of those 9600 / 14.4 US Robotics models.

I've owned 4 E28s.. Also 8 2002's, 6 drivers, 1 parts car & 1 project I just sold to a forum member. I'm starting to like E28's more I think.

1. 83 528e Polaris silver / blue 5 speed. Owned about 12 years or so. Rebuilt front end 3 times. Red poly, Grunt's blue, Meyle HD in that order. It looked like Sanford & Son TV show truck.
Sanded down to factory primer & yellow epoxy primer on one side, I never got it painted. Surface rust would start to break through & I'd sand that area & hit it with primer or rust converter.
It suffered through 2 severe hail storms, lost 2 windshields etc. Had bad rust in drivers floor pan last year or so. Very reliable. Once I put 16" E39 basketweave wheels on it after a front end rebuild, I realized it could handle as good or better than a 2002. It was then I got hooked on E28's.

2. 87 535is Blue/ tan parts car. Given to me for cost of Towing. Got it w/out drivetrain & missing 90% of interior. But had a driveshaft in the trunk. That saved me $ 300 later on for car
# 4. Saved the PPG windshield from this one, & the 4 doors. Cut the drivers side floorpan out for my 83, but never did anything with it.

3. 88 528e Bronzeit Beige / white cloth Autotragic. This one may be in the hands of a north Texas forum member soon. If I had more space, time & less back pain, I'd keep it & put the 5 speed from the 83 in it & the blue 83 interior or E34 seats. Very nice body with a few dings, not so nice cloth interior. Auto trans blown. Sunroof on this one works perfect, like 1st owner never used it. First owner had it for 18 years.

4. 88 535is zinno/perl beige 5 speed. After calling about buying the perl beige leather seats & door cards from the 88 535is part out ad, I bought the car instead. It had been rear-ended, but my amateur hammer & dolly skills fixed it to my satisfaction as a daily driver. I'll post a writeup at somepoint. It has quite a few things that make it a "keeper", even with a tweaked rear panel & trunk lid.

Enjoying this thread. It truly reveals a lot!

BMW 528e x 3 - only E28s I've ever owned

1. 1983 528e, 5-speed
Bought, 25 Oct 1988, 78,411 miles (Framingham, MA)
Retired, 9 Sep 2001, 317,xxx miles (rust)
Image

2. 1987 528e, 5-speed
Bought, Jun 1994, 74,xxx miles (NYC, NY)
Retired, Jan 2011, 276,xxx miles (rust)
Image

3. 1988 528e, 5-speed
Bought April 2010, 76,197 miles (Hendersonville, NC)
Converted to 5-speed in Jan 2011
Daily Driver (pictured below)

I had an 1981 E21 320i 5-speed (44k), bought in 1985, sold in 1989. I've had 2 E39s, a 525i 5-speed bought in 2004 (45k) and sold in 2011, and a 530i 5-speed bought in 2012 with me currently (pictured below)... interestingly enough, this most recent E39 was the first car I ever bought for myself with over 100k miles!! (110k)

I'm only buying one more and it will be Zinno, Number #7 and will have the personalized plate "L A NOR" since "ELANOR" is taken-ed. Only 6 letters plus a space in backwards Kentucky. Kick my self in the arse once a week that I didn't buy Rich in Tupelo's Zinno (well when you were there) when he offered it up to me.

Probably wont have another unless Chris gifts me the 'flirtin' with disaster' red car.

Right.

That'll happen.

I really like them, but can't afford one that I'd want.
Duh,

Forgot about the '88 m5 that dunnojack is presumably letting rot in a driveway in Berkeley, and the '85 m535i that vatoloco keeps threatening to sell.

I was wondering why you left those out. Its one thing to threaten to sell a car and price it where it would sell and quite another to do what he/she is doing.

That black and Taurus M535i was the one that started my on/off obsession with owning one of these, especially that Taurus interior. Any idea what happened to the car?

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I actually got here from an image search for that car!

If that car is the reason for resurrecting the thread, then all is forgiven as it, too, is largely responsible for starting my love affair with E28s- and M535is in particular. (We also have my friend Brandon to thank, as he took many of the wonderful photos of that car that are floating around the 'net.)

As for the car itself, I believe it changed hands multiple times, was ultimately wrecked, and is now parted. Someone (don't know who) did manage to grab that sweet Taurus interior as it was made available on this forum. A sad outcome for a fine M535i.

Funny... I thought I might be the only one remembering some obscure car. I guess we have good taste. ;) for some reason, I associate e28's with the 1980's Germany and the Iron Curtain. This M535i looked straight out of some cloak and dagger car chase.

Drew, do you know any of the back story or who originally built the car?

I believe that car (as you and I remember it, at least) was the handiwork of the OP, Jon in Richmond.

1. 86 635 auto
2. 86 635 5 speed
3. 86 m635
4. 85 635 5 speed
5. 89 635 auto-converted to 5 speed.

Hmmmm, this is going to be depressing I think.

9 E28s - Currently have 2 (1 533, 3 528e, 5 535i)
1 E24 parts car-long gone
1 E23 euro 735 - Currently have and plan to keep
2 E34s - 1 wagon, 1 525, both gone

I am a relative newbie I guess.

I have have (0r do) owned 3 e28's

In order:

1986 535i "The Bronzit" Totaled on the way to The Vintage two years ago.

1982 528e 5speed The ultimate $500 car!

1987 535iS The replacement for the totaled one

I have owned e23's. I mention these as they are so close to the e28 in so many ways

1983 733i 5 speed. Stupidly sold in the prime of it's life.

1984 733i 5 speed This is the almost famous s38 engined "M7" created by EricQ.

Oh you SOB. I saw that car and thought it to be the perfect donor for my car (also Arktisblau) but monies prevented that happening. Sad day, but at least it's going to a good home.

On topic, according to the state of CT I've only owned 1 E28 - my current '86 535i. But my first one (signed MA title still sitting on my nightstand haha) was a rotted-out '87 535is that I parted - some of that car lives on in the '86 currently, or will live on it once it gets painted and/or I stop procrastinating.
