Euro Airbox for S38 - M5?

Being advertised for Euro M5 or M6. Can someone clarify? Just when I thought I knew everything about E28 M5s.....

It will only "fit" one or the other, not both. I've never seen them all side-by-side, so I don't know about the intricacies of the design.

13 71 1 308 023 = Euro M5

13 71 1 311 531= US M5

13 71 1 306 765 = Euro M635CSi up to 2/88

13 71 1 309 765 = US M6 up to 2/88

13 71 1 312 091 = Euro M635CSi & US M6 from 2/88

Well, I have Euro headlights and if I recall I was not able to put the OEM US headlight cover/intake "snorkel" back on because the headlight wiring/connectors were too long. I just have it open and have a fabricated shield to keep hot air from being sucked into the box.

So will this box benefit my set up?

This is the box that is on my 1985 euro m5. The US boxes are diferent. They dont have the snorkel. I would think that you want to try to get the euro box for your setup, if I understand your situation.

I assume that is one of the two being sold by Autobahn here in Sandy Eggo.
I was considering one and asked Rich about it since he has a Euro. He thinks it's a 'downgrade' and I agree.

Split second sells a 4" flange that bolts onto the same side/area as the small plastic intake horn and doughnut on the US M5 airbox. Then you buy a short piece of 4" silicone hose and you now have a nice big fat 4" intake ! The plastic horn piece just unscrews from the plastic cover that goes behind the driver's side headlights. The hole needs no modifications., the hose slips right in. A bit tight.., but does fit.

Ours don't have a snorkel. There's supposed to be a foam ring or doughnut between the box and the plastic headlamp cover.

My previous "euro-converted" M5 had some sort of short straight snorkle that came off the headlight cover and a foam donut before the air box. I figured it was stock,but, they were euro headlights. My current US Spec M5 is missing the headlight cover and there is just a large hole in the front of the air box.

That's how mine is too. I guess I just wasn't considering the tube on the headlamp panel a Snorkel (note new spelling ). I guess I will start referring to it as a Snorkel. Not because I think that's what it is, but because I like using 'Snorkel' so much.

Here's a pic of Marc Norris' car from 5er Fest 2004. This is where I got the idea from. His car is running split second so uses a Ford MAF body. The flange I'm talking about is on the inlet side and adapts to 4" silicone hose that sticks through the plastic cover behind the driver's side headlights.

They only show the Euro box w/ snout! on RealOEM.com. No US snorkel/headlight cover shown

Thanks for pics philo. I'm in between air box/ intakes right now. I've tried everything including a custom K&N cone filter set up (hold the rotten tomatoes please) From "seat of the pants" testing my "swiss cheese" treatment of my airbox seems to work best. I'll leave it at that.....

I didn't make any modification to the airbox on my car nor did I have to modify the panels behind the lights when I went Euro-lights. IIRC they fit 'snug' against the back of the bulb housings for the euro bulbs, but they do fit and required no mods.

There may be different parts available, but it doesn't seem to be a requirement, certainly not for proper operation.

Looks like I don't need to make any modifications either. Test fit the lights yesterday with the plugs in place. Snug fit as well but no mods needed, fortunately
