I bought something SHINY!

Post by Da_Hose »

Well, I looked at the engine in my old girl and saw that the oil cap was cracked in a couple of spots. Up til now, pretty much everything I have done on my car had a performance purpose, but I figured what the hell! I poked around and ended up buying my first piece pure "bling". The cap was supposed to have an //M logo on it, but this is what they sent me.

So I sent off a slightly huffy email complaining about it just being chrome with a cheap sticker. The seller's reply was a very polite response (in BAD English grammar) that told me to remove the protective sticker. DOH! This is what it looks like on the engine.

The colors are correct, but the red is a little gloppy. Not a big deal as I could just get some model paint and a top coat would fix it. The M is in black. I did notice that the spring retaining clip inside is held on by a screw. I don't EVER want that to come loose! So I removed the screw, indexed the retaining clip to line up the logo correctly and put the screw back in with some red Loctite.

It's a silly little shiny thing, but I like it and it's nicely chromed aluminum. Cost was $35 to my door.

Hahaha. That was pretty funny about the sticker. Doesn't look too bad. Kind of like understated bling.

Yeah, I had that "egg on your face" feeling when I sent the reply thanking them for clearing the sticker thing up.

When looking for a metal oil cap, all I could find was "universal" versions that made me nervous to buy sight-unseen. There was one ACSchnitzer cap I saw, but that would be the only ACS part on the car, so I nixed that idea. It's tough to find something without brand names on it. This one was metal and had that actual //M logo, so I decided to give it a shot.

Looks like we have mostly traditionalists round here who don't like shiny bits on the engine, though.

have had one of those on my e30 for a while, i ended up replacing the gasket as the original one got squishy quickly, a sign of non automotive grade rubber, iirc i used the one for a old 4 banger volvo but its been a few years

Did you just get a new gasket from a local parts place or did you buy a scrap cap? Mine is just a hair undersized and I couldn't reuse my old one. It was too brittle and split as I removed it.

it was a new one i had in stock, its been long enough that i am not positive that it was a volvo, a new gasket should only be a few bucks for whatever

Isn't anything with an //M logo on it worth 10 HP as a rule?

Too bad because the "sport" sticker is worth 17.
