Beautiful day here in Phila ... (lotsa pics)

Post by Tammer in Philly »

I intended to go to NYC this weekend to visit sister one, then up to Boston to see sister two, then watch the Boston marathon/party rowdily with some old Bawlmer friends who moved up there. Unfortunately, gas prices ($3.05 here) and the reality of my workload conspired to keep me at home. So instead of hitting on Harvard Law chicks, I rubbed down a couple girls at home. The driveway was a fun place to be today, with a pair of E28s and a visit from my friend and his Evo VIII MR:

We did some car washing and went for a drive on some fun roads, then stopped to snap a couple of pics. The M5's paint is original, and I'm very pleased with how it shines up:

(H&R springs/Bilstein sport shocks for those who may be curious.)

I was surprised at the Evo's size--this is the first time we've had the cars side-by-side. They are nearly identical in length, the Mitsu is a good bit taller and seemingly infinitely wider:

I always thought the Evo was a bit of an ugly duckling, but those sort of thoughts vaporize as soon as you put the pedal down. Its cornering capability is staggering, and the MR's ride crosses past "tolerable" into the "pretty good" range on its Bilsteins. And as an E30 M3 fan, I have to grudgingly like any shape that's functional and includes big fender bulges:

It's funny how different the two cars are, though their basic purpose is the same: 4 doors, 5 seats, practical/reliable/comfortable enough for daily runabout use, but able to run with some very serious machinery when the need arises. Getting out of one and into the other is an interesting experience. At the end of the day, I'll take the E28 ... but if I could have both, I would.

Nice cars! I really like how your euro convertion looks with that color. That area around license plate is a bitch to detail, eh?

If you will be coming to Boston, let me know.

the Evo vs. the E28=night and day, no? There is no comparison. I obviously love my E28, but it simply cannot even compare. I would feel apprehensive about that much power in an E28; as a 20+ year old car (in terms of both outright age and engineering technology), it's just too loose!

btw, i didn't see the front of your car; how's the euro conversion coming?

Front pics of Silver will wait 'til the conversion is complete! ;-) Recall that car was hit last fall, I have all the paperwork submitted for a Reconstructed Title, and I have to keep it off the road for a few weeks 'til I receive the new registration. In the meantime, I'm busting my tail on some school work. Expect the conversion to be complete before 5erfest!

Igor, I should be coming up to Boston in mid-May; I'll give you a heads-up and bring along that bumper trim strip you've been so patient with.

As for what I'd choose ... money no object, I'd still take the E28. The Evo doesn't put out that much more power in stock form, it's really the suspension and steering that make it so frickin' nimble. Of course, a turbo-back exhaust and a boost controller with wideband O2 feedback put you up around 350-360 hp really easily, and cams/injectors give you 350+ to the wheels. The one pictured is consistently running 1.5 bar boost from 2600 rpm on up ... it's quite the rush. But, I like sleepers, and the Evo is no sleeper.

I respect!

I might want 1 or two other pieces if they are perfect.

Thanks.

amen. if it were only about driving, then i'd pick the evo. but it isn't, and it never will be. that's why i'm driving a 5er and not a 3.

Money no object E28 M5 no question. The Evo depreciates in power VERY fast because of the high boost pressures.

Fun pictures to see, can't believe how big the Evo looks compared to an E28 M5. Progress = "bigger vehicles" apparently?

So who's this bum and why's he leaning on your M5?

Adam, that bum is the PO, Curt K. And he can drive the damn thing 5x as well as I can, though I aim to close that gap further this summer. Curt's a seriously nice guy, a hell of a driver, and was a good caretaker of the car for 7 years. He emails to check up on it from time to time--asked Jay N. about it too! Talk about separation anxiety. :-)
