Supersprint muffler
I am trying to make sense of the supersprint exhaust for the m5. I am wanting a supersprint rear muffler, and build the rest of the system to fit it. I have seen the m5 euro exhaust muffler at BMP...
It appears to be the same muffler the 635csi. However, Supersprint has two different rear mufflers for that car. There is a euro version with 80mm tips and a us version with 70mm tips.
As far as I know the only difference is the tips size and length, the us version is longer, my guess to accommodate the diving board bumper. Can I use this one on the m5? And would it look ridiculous with euro bumpers?
Also, it appears that the supersprint muffler has its hangers in a different spot, back closer to the inlets. IIRC the m5 has a hanger right over the outlets.

The answer to most of your questions is "yes."rollcentre wrote:I am trying to make sense of the supersprint exhaust for the m5. I am wanting a supersprint rear muffler, and build the rest of the system to fit it. I have seen the m5 euro exhaust muffler at BMP...

More detail - You can use the US SS muffler with Euro bumpers, and it will look a bit ridiculous.
Talk to BMP, order the Euro, and you may have to wait a little bit until they either get one in or another production run is made. The part is not EOL, it's just not readily available. But it looks great and sounds great.
I don't have any pictures of the hanger I put together, but it's not difficult to securely hang the rear of the Euro SS muffler from the US hanger location.

Thanks Micah. A picture is worth a thousand words.
I got of the phone with BMP. The guy I talked to was pretty helpful. It sounds like supersprint in Italy is off all of August, so production won't start 'til sometime next month, then add another month or so for production and shipping... So it's gonna be a while.

Re: Supersprint muffler
The Euro version of the M5 muffler has a different hanger system than the US version. The hanger on the Euro version is a separate band. You can use the band hanger and Euro M5 rear muffler on a US M5, but visually it won't look correct due to the cutout in the US rear valance. The Euro valance doesn't have the cutout, it runs straight. When using the Euro muffler and hanger system on a US car, the muffler looks like it's hanging too low.MicahO wrote:The answer to most of your questions is "yes."rollcentre wrote:I am trying to make sense of the supersprint exhaust for the m5. Rich! That was going to be my next question. I was afraid of that. It looks good on Micah's car... but that appears to be a euro valance. right? or did he pull the muffler up higher than normal with his custom hanger? hmmm.Rich Euro M5 wrote: The Euro version of the M5 muffler has a different hanger system than the US version. Also do one of you guys know the tubing diameter for the ss? 50mm?

Here's a picture of the US M5 muffler below a Supersprint US muffler. The Supersprint can is the same part number for both S38 and M30 but the Euro can has the shorter tips as you can see on Micah's car. Otherwise the cans are the same, including the Euro hanger seen welded to the top of the US can in my photo. You can see the hanger location and tip lengths are the same for US cars on the US Supersprint. If you were to cut your factory M5 exhaust in front of the muffler you can slip fit the Supersprint muffler over the pipe ends. I don't think you can do this on an M30 exhaust. Someone correct me but I think the M30 Boysen is 47mm, the M5 and Supersprint are 50mm and the Supersprint can is a slip fit to the Supersprint resonator. The resonator outlet and the factory M5 pipes are the same diameter.
The Supersprint resonator has a three bolt inlet flange which will bolt directly to the cat outlet on an M30 so this is a complete bolt on catback solution for the M30. If you want to utilize the entire system on an M5 you have to cut the flanges on either the cat outlet (2 bolt), or resonator inlet (3 bolt), and weld the corresponding match to the opposite pipe.

Re: Supersprint muffler
My car is still wearing the US valance. My euro valance still currently adorns a shelf in the garage. I keep saying I'm going to start that project....rollcentre wrote:Rich! I've got the muffler pulled somewhat higher than the band would have it sit, but there is plenty of clearance in the muffler tunnel - no bonking.
Tubing is the same 50mm as stock pipes. I've currently got the SS can connected directly (perfect slide-on fit) to the OEM center resonator. The SS came with nice big band clamps for the connection, though I don't recall if the bands were included with the center resonator or the rear can.
Comparing the euro tips to the US tips in Aaron's picture, the Euro outlets have a slight S bend to the side so that they align with the cutout in the euro valance.

You mean the euro M5 (and all euro E28s) DO have the cut out and the US E28 doesn't.Rich Euro M5 wrote:The Euro valance doesn't have the cutout, it runs straight. When using the Euro muffler and hanger system on a US car, the muffler looks like it's hanging too low.

Re: Supersprint muffler
Yup, I had it backwards, and add what Chris K. says as well. What I do remember from 13 years ago when I used a Euro M5 muffler with the stock band support on my deceased 533i, it didn't look right.Jelmer538i wrote:You mean the euro M5 (and all euro E28s) DO have the cut out and the US E28 doesn't.Rich Euro M5 wrote:The Euro valance doesn't have the cutout, it runs straight. I have the whole SS setup on my M30 based car. Here is the US version fitment using Euro bumpers. It's long, I know. The upside is not very much carbon left on my white paint. The downside is it looks a bit long to be correct, and it leaves nasty shin burns if you brush by it wearing shorts. The setup went on while the US bumpers were on and it still looked a bit long. Now it's even more obvious. I keep threatening to shorten the tubes to tuck the tips nearer the valance, but I haven't seemed to do it yet.
