See, I was thinking about maybe having kid # 4 running around. Wifey drove up from Atlanta last night, made it home by 10:30AM. Got the UHaul unloaded and returned by 1:PM. She took a nap so she wouldn't be too overtired. I was looking forward to bunking the kids down early and doing some hurricane boogie?

Then a big pine tree basically cleaved my mother's house in half, right through the kitchen and into the basement in one spot. HFS territory. I drove downtown to pull them out and couldn't get within a quarter mile of their house for all of the trees down, so I walked in and they hiked out with me, around a number of downed power lines. Loads of fun. I have to say theyve got great neighbors, three different folks out there asking a) who the hell am I walking around in the dark, and b) is anyone hurt? We live in a nice town.

So I got them out of the house, turned off the main breaker and killed all of their oil lamps. We'll deal with their destroyed house tomorrow. I've got them back up on the hill, where there are far fewer big trees, but a shit-ton more wind. It was amusing watching my mom get blown about 20 feet across the driveway at one point; I'm not sure how she stayed on her feet. It sounds like a freight train out there, and wifey will not let anyone sleep upstairs under all of the big picture windows.

So we're all bunked down in the den, with Mom in the house, and any thoughts of a hurricane-baby are long gone.....

edit - bing! I just got the the emails. We finally lost power over at my office in Westchester and failed to the generator. Kudos to ConEd for getting us this far. I've got 3 days of diesel fuel there, may as well use it.....

ConEd has apparently shut off power to all or most of lower Manhattan. This is supposedly at least part of the reason why. Fast forward to around 2:50, and pay attention to bottom left of the building with the stacks on the other side of the river.

It's quite the thing to watch.

Wow, glad to hear it wasn't worse news, Micha. The winds were very underwhelming here, which is a good thing. Seems like it's on the downward slide now.

I can relate. After Hugo we were nailed by every named storm flung off the coast of Africa for a good 10 years. It got old fast, but you learn to deal.
All of the microbes left from the retreating seawater will stink for a week, but all will be well. It goes away. Don't go nuts, Shoveling mud is good exercise. At least you won't be interrupted by a cell phone ring. (For a while).
Lastely, I can't stess the importance of not opening any freezers that have been without power for some time. Last one I opened, I barfed on myself and then took off running. After I sat down, I still smelled "that" freezer on me still and then barfed again. When I saw all of that barf on my shirt and in my crotch, I puked. You get the point. And if not, think of me during the barf. It will help.

Looks to me like the first part is sped up. At 1:48 or so, the screen goes dark. At about 2:20, the same person that walked across the video quickly in the beginning walked across slower. I think it's the same video twice.

I think its been pretty mild here in Ohio so far. Although I do have my generator under cover so all you need to do is pull the cable. Even the choke is pulled. Ready.

Still have power here. It's 12:30 and I'm going to bed. It's become awfully quiet outside. Wind has calmed down, the rain stopped a while ago. It's kinda weird.

I went and picked up a car in Raleigh and drove it back. Talk about an iffy ride for the last hour since entering VA (Emporia). The car's front steering was really bad and the bumps and weather didn't help. :/

There's a tree down near Franklin Park, affecting power and phone service in parts of Round Hill & Purcellville.
We never lost power on our side of Leesburg. Some smaller or dead branches are on the ground, and it's still raining, but glad the wind is over.
